So (for example) Nou lives in his aunt's basement making video game mods because he believes that will make him attractive to a mate?

I think that a lot of people aren't aware of the motivations behind a lot of the things they do. Nou's not a real person so he doesn't count. In a way though, yeah he probably is. Making those video game mods is the only thing he's good at. That skill will eventually get him a job, which will possibly lead to his becoming wealthy, thus making him more attractive, desirable, etc.
Some people spend hours in the gym every week to make themselves look better for a mate. Nou makes video games for free.
It obviously doesn't apply to every single person, but think about how strong of a motivational factor sex is. I mean, humans evolved from primates right? Do you think that primates' purpose in life is to eat bananas and make rudimentary tools all day, or do you think it's to procreate and pass on their genes? I don't think it's hard to see that humans wouldn't have just lost that innate urge, especially since doing so would greatly diminish their chances of furthering their species and more specifically their own bloodline.
