I think Dave Smith is just taking the piss at this point... In 2020 you're willing to pay stupid sums of money for re-issued tech from 70's/80's? Like Moog, just taking the absolute piss.

I mean it's gonna be something like 5 grand here at least, and doesn't even have any on-board fx to work with.. The Prophet 6 would be a smarter choice if you're actually in the market for a high end poly at the moment.
Yeah I get the heritage and history of the Prophet 5, but this is clearly priced just for collector types, for bragging rights of having an actual Prophet 5, and as a huge barrier to entry for the average producer. Like making stuff only for the elites, not for actual musicians. I find it hard to believe that there's no way it could actually be made to be more affordable in 2020.

These DSI/SC reproductions aren’t really aimed at producers, particularly not hobbyists, IMO. It’s more aimed at old dudes like myself who owned analog synths back in the 70s/80s and now have enough expendable income to buy one (no, I’m not going to buy one, but it’s cool to see a new Rev).

Guess I was being a bit harsh. I suppose it's nice to have nice things. Not my cup of tea but, can't say it's not a nice instrument.

But if you buy one then you can go on gearslutz and tell everybody that you can TOTALLY hear the indiscernible differences between the new version and the older ones. That’s the real reason people buy them.

3500$ US - As for onboard fx, I am unsure I would actually want that. I mean, I would rather pair them with my own hardware personally just for the flexibility and options.
Plus, what kind of build like this can you get in other types for the price. It's wood, hand crafted. Yea, you can get cheaper but as I always say, you get what you pay for. Otherwise I'd just go with a Behringer 12.
Is it novel? Absolutely. Do I want? Absolutely

No doubt this will happen!

I don't really agree with you but I'm not here to argue. Personally I'd go for a Prophet 6 or OB6, or hell even the Arturia polybrute over one of these without doubt.

Argue? lol Nah...It's all personal preference man. To each his own. I guess I am one of those "old" guys Dave was talking about

My only GAS these days is Keyscape. It’s the only Spectrasoncis instrument I don’t own. Can’t decide if I should just buy it now, or hold off until Black Friday... hmmmmm

There's not really that much I'm gassing for at this stage either. Guess I've been on a bit of a Kontakt bender recently, picked up the Damage update which is pretty amazing, alongside a few other libraries.
I'm pretty interested in the Cycles library from Slate & Ash though.

I’ve got way more GAS for camera lenses these days. We’ve got so much invested already, but there are a couple more I want. It would be cheaper to buy some nice hardware synths, though

That's because you don't understand manufacturing costs. And I mean that in a totally non patronising way.

To be true to the original (which is what they've done, plus genuine meaningful upgrades) they have to make it the way it used to be made, which was before modern production line style techniques.

It's not that the P5 is expensive, it's that everything else has become so cheap.

And anyway, compared to most other types of top end musical instruments it's still a complete bargain. A friend of mines wife is a concert cellist. Her cello, £15k, the BOW for the cello, £1500.

Furthermore, when the P5 was originally released it cost around $15k adjusted for inflation, so just under $5k for a version with more features and double the polyphony is a freakin' bargain tbh.

Exactly. And, as mentioned, it holds across the board for most quality musical instruments. My main bass cost about $2K back in the 90s, and most pro basses these days cost $1500-3000 and much higher for boutique basses. So, a $3k+ price tag on a synth doesn’t seem outlandish in the big picture. But, that’s not to say that you can’t buy some amazing basses In the sub-$500 range and there are a lot of incredible bassists out there blowing people’s minds with Korean-made Squiers.
