First of all, please forgive my lack of knowledge in this field. I currently have a Samsung m620, which is very small, and has protective leather sleeve with a built-in secondary battery. I've been pretty happy with it, but pressing one key 3-4x to get a letter while texting is annoying, as you can imagine. One side is an mp3 player, the other side is the actual phone. My 3 yr contract with Bell is now up. I have a corporate deal since I'm employed with the gov't. My average monthly bill is aprox $50 (unlimited local calling after 6pm and w/e's, caller ID, voice mail, all incl.), with 250 texts, but I think I'll bump that up since I've been texting more and more. I have big hands/fingers, and wanted to get a cell with a slide-out type of keyboard, but that is also great at playing mp3 dj sets (when I jog, bike, x-c, ski, etc...), and ideally has a camera. I don't really need to use the web. If the phone can access wi-fi hotspots and I can surf for free, then that would be great. The recent flyer I got promotes the LG Rumour 2, Motorola Dext, and Nokia N97, for the slide-out keyboards. Seems like those phones are most type-friendly (for guys like me) and economical (since I don't need all the bells and whistles). Looking for reliability, quality, user friendliness - I have no qualms paying for that.

NDP tables “Cellphone Freedom Act” aimed to unlock cellphones

Bruce Hyer, NDP MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North, introduced private members’ Bill C-560 today, otherwise known as the “Cellphone Freedom Act”. According to the dedicated site “Don’t Lock My Freedom” there are 3 rules:

Consumers buying new cell phones in Canada must be informed of the existence of any network lock on their phone before sale.
Phone companies must unlock handsets upon request, free of charge, when a consumer purchases a new phone outright without a contract, or any time after purchase.
Phone companies must unlock handsets upon request, free of charge, when a consumer comes to the end of their contract or at any time thereafter.
Hyer said “Mobile phone customers should have the freedom to choose whether they want to be locked into a company’s cell network or not. Right now, most consumers don’t even know they can’t switch to another network without throwing out their phone and buying a new one, or trying to unlock their handset at some expensive aftermarket shop. Many resort to trying to download complicated instructions off the internet, but these can result in dead phones if used improperly.”

Its a good way for the NDP to get young voters who just turned 18 or are voting for their first time to try and vote for them.

Rogers to launch Chatr, a new low-end brand to compete with WIND, Mobilicity & Public Mobile



Forgive us for keeping this really short, but there’s still a lot of information we don’t know. Over the last few days, we’ve been hearing a lot of Canadian birdies singing that Rogers Wireless is planning to launch a new wireless brand in Canada. To be known as Chatr, the carrier is said to have been created solely for the purpose of putting wireless upstarts WIND Mobile and Mobilicity out of business by offering affordable handsets and great rate plans. It is said that the training of employees will begin in earnest as of mid-July, and will be followed shortly with the official launch of the brand in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa. We do not have specific information about pricing at the moment as that is still being worked out by the high ups, but we do know for a fact that the handsets Chatr will offer include the Nokia 1661, Nokia 2680 slide, Samsung Gravity and the LG Sapphire. We’ll be back with more as we get it.
