There were people on the Mall yesterday protesting that remind me of you. It was funny cause you could spot them by the way the National Guardsmen standing on the top of Hummers were eyeing them the whole time.

Someone walking by said "poor redneck, hard to believe they think they're superior to anyone, isn't it?" I lol'ed.

Elite white liberals talking down on their redneck brethren are special.

you're in DC right? where'd you end up watching everything? i had tix to swearing-in and the parade, but after scouting out the silver area on sunday (probably 1/2 to 3/4 a mile from the Capitol), i just decided to go to the parade bleachers on 14th street nw and penn ave.

Wow, so did you stay for the parade too? We hightailed it out of there after the national anthem ended and didn't even try to get to the parade route.

I ended up in the on the mall, dead center with the Capitol, at about 3rd St. It was very close to the front of the public viewing areas and just behind the silver area. If you could figure out how to get there, apparently they started letting the general public into the silver area since it was only partially full just before the ceremony started. I was with a pretty big group and some people ended up in front of the small reflecting pool by the capitol.

Took forever to get out of there though - we needed to get south of 395 and ended up walking all the way back to the 12th St. tunnel.

yeah word. i just didn't think the silver ticket area was worth it, considering how far the capitol looked. my friends and i took the MARC from BWI into DC and got in around 8. we just booked it right to the parade. audio of the inauguration was being broadcast along the route -- we stayed until the president and VP went by, then we went back to Union Station via Metro to leave town. what a mess outside of union!

It was cool, just because you could really get a sense for how many people were there. It was definitely an experience - the silence when Obama started speaking was almost as impressive as the crowd - I've never heard so many people so quiet.

That was actually the most heartening thing about the whole day. When was the last time that so many people eagerly awaited what their President had to say? Has to be since right after 9/11, right?

If nothing else, I think Obama has reached out and engaged a generation.

You know, he should be really grateful to Bush for that. Even foreigners are excited about him... myself included. Now that we know how disastrous the American president can be for the rest of the world, it's hard not to "care"

Yesterday, everyone in my workplace was watching the inauguration. It was awesome because for the first time ever, we were all watching the very same thing... and in 3 different languages (I was watching it live on CNN, my boss and some other colleagues on NHK, and the handyman watched it on a Brazilian channel).
