I have to address this. I highly doubt that Jewish society as a whole would really give two shits if someone worked on the Sabbath. Regularly going off on rants and breaking things in the temple during service, on the other hand, probably would have upset a few people. Doesn't sound like much of a pacifist to me.
If Jesus truly existed, I don't see much evidence to support that he was a good, kind man who didn't want any trouble. The New Testament says he was innocent, but I wouldn't trust a Christian book to give an accurate account of that, or to explain Jewish society in general, considering that these same people believed in ridiculous concepts like Blood Libel.
Show me a secular book with an account of this, and I'll listen.
