I have to speak up on this one...
If he still knows how to mix properly, then why wouldnt he do that?
I mean really... who has a SKILL like that and then doesnt use it because they are "raking in millions"?
I am not arguing with you at all, but what I am saying is, that if that actually IS the case, I think it is even more pathetic than not being able to mix well because of lack of skill.
After all these years of mixing for this guy, and the RIDICULOUS # of shows per year he plays... mixing should be like BREATHING to him.
And of course that doesnt mean I am expecting a perfect mix every time, but it is just a simple fact that the more and more someone does something, the better and better they should get at it( and anyone in a #1 position in ANYTHING, should be at the top top top of their game, in EVERY aspect, period.) ... i really doubt he trainwrecks because he "doesn't care" , I think he trainwrecks because he is obviously a mediocre mixer AT BEST. (and this is not to say he doesnt have great stage presence or awesome track selection, which I will touch on in a sec)
this is nothing new of Tiesto really.
I have been listening to Dance music since 1997 and I have listened to Tiesto since the launch of his career, not to mention seeing him at RAVES ever before ANY club would ever take him, or DJs like him...
Anyway, if you have a decent ear, and listen back to Nyana, and literally ALL of of the Magik Muzik CD series (#1-6 or 7??), there are terrible mixes ALL over the place. I'm not saying I didnt like the CDs, because track selection wise, at the time, they were top notch cds, but even then, he was technically.. ehhhh
The bottom line is, he's a good looking Dutchee with charisma, usually solid track selection, an insane marketing team and technically he is a C+ (imo) (Paul Van Dyk is an A)
AND, the guy is obviously a champ, because its not just like any person could withstand all the pressure of his position, and all the shows/ travel he has to do throughout the year.
I totally commend his endurance and passion.
BUT, there has to be more to being #1 than endurance and passion.
#1 are big shoes to fill
I just wish if he is gonna keep hogging the #1 slot, that he would live up to that in all areas.
People in the #1 should be setting the bar, and setting it HIGH.
not just worrying about how many people they can pull per show for how much $$$.
I'm not bashing at all, I am just telling it like it is, in my eyes.
I don't dislike Tiesto, but I have not been impressed lately.
The show Saturday was nothing special to me, the track list was a bit all over the place..
BUT, I give Element and Co. mad props for pulling off this first ever in the u.s. production
I think they have balls for taking it on, and I think they tried to carry out their vision as best they could.
I would have liked to see some white lasers (full color) or some other muticolor lasers in there, instead of just the same green ones that you see everywhere, but oh well
I would have also liked to see a couple more projection screens/video screens, instead of just the one huge one way behind him at the back of the stage..
(the sound btw, imo, was pheonomenal)
And the lights being synched better would have been cool, BUT overall, they pulled it off.
TIESTO himself, on the other hand, did not pull it off, IMO.
All I am saying is.. that if it was me behind those decks.. and there were 10,000+ people there to see me in a country that was not even my own.. well, I would have been a lot more excited than that... I would have been crowd surfing, jumping up and down and dancing... and showing my fans how appreciate and happy I was to play for them..
not to mention that my mixing would be on.. even if i was not normally a good mixer.. um hello, its called practicing, and i think a dj has that responsibility if that many people are paying that much to see that show
Tiesto looked bored most of the time, giving a few of his cute smiles and a couple dance moves here and there.. but other than that....
Anyway, I really could go on forever, and this wasn't some thesis with a intro, body conclusion, lol, it's just my random free thoughs about some of the things I have been reading in this thread.
If you love Tiesto, great, if you don't, super
I guess the bottom line is everyone has a different idea of what #1 should be
and it seems alot of people think that Tiesto meets that criteria
go tiesto!
.... i'd still love to battle him one day, i think we would have fun :P
