Many of these tracks I was fortunate enough to be the first to bring them to crowds here in Vancouver and around the province. Should have seen the reaction of 3000+ ppl hearing Urban Train for their first time in 2001.
Unreal, especially on my end to be playing it to them. I'm playing that same festival one month from now, now in their 9th year.. though this time they aren't too warm to the idea of trance and I would not have been asked to play such a big slot if I was playing trance.

I am 17 years old. When I first discovered trance I remember sitting in my bedroom listening to an Oakenfold essential mix, with tears streaming down my face and my legs unable to stop moving. To me that was pretty much it, I was hooked. HOWEVER, since that time my tastes have digressed into all EDM, most notably progressive house/breaks, and tech house.

These days they would come to mind if I was asked my favourite genre. Why? because today, compared with '99, trance is a dirty word to the average person. There has been too much poor quality production over the years and it has perpetually tarnished the reputation of our 'guilty pleasure'. In fact most people cannot believe that I am so passionate about this cheesey 'doof doof' music.

They only hear the cheese, because to find the quality you are forced to dig very deep. I think everyone who has posted on this thread will agree that there is still awesome trance out there, I don't even need to stipulate that. What I do believe we must consider is in what magnitude we wish trance to be 'alive' in. Are we seeking Trance to become the next pathetic electro house commercial rubbish that gets ignorant young people loose? Or do we just want an improvement in overall quality of trance specifically for addicts like ourselves? Frankly, If the former occurs, Trance is off the agenda for me.

However I do feel that there is a requirement, if trance is going to transgress and become successful in the manner of 99' again, elements of other electronic genres must be phazed in. For example, the deep production technques of progressive dance music, and dare I say it electro style synths, just to keep things fresh. The fact is, most of the synth lines and melodies that connotate uplifting trance have been exhausted, and producers should go about creating trance that is emotionally powerful in a more intricate way. I think time is the real key here, producers need to take the time to make high quality music that works on more than the level of bassline build up and melody.

Of course I am just an idiot 17 year old kid from Australia, but I do love music. And I love trance. And I'd love nothing more than to see it continue to prosper. In order for it to do that, a more profound approach to creating the music should be implemented, more so than the halcyon days of Paul Oakenfold.

I'm going to be playing some BIG progressive tracks heavy on the bassline, some french house with more monster basslines, electro, & some rockin breaks. A couple massive classics thrown into the mix no doubt. There's so much bass in the size of that soundsystem that the basslines just CRUSH! Anyways back on topic here.. well said ders07 that scenario is all too common unfortunately. Trance is far too much of a bad word to too many people and that stigma prevents a lot of people from giving it much chance.

Trance isn't dead. Nothing more to say TBH. If you feel it's dead move on to another genre. The same thing was discussed one year ago (and two years ago etc.). It's like keep saying that PC gaming is dead,when clearly it isn't. So please,get over with it,we really got bored with this thing every year

Last night was the halfway point of 2006, the year is now 2006.5. I went to a new years themed party last night which was a lot of fun, John B was there and he played some of those tracks off that "Trance n Bass" CD we were talking about in 2002.

What I wonder, is if there is any nice trance to look forward to in 2006.5.

I remember there being "trance is dead" topics in 2001 when suburban train was just coming out, I remember people being dissapointed with "In my memory". Before everyone was into ASOT people were still saying trance is dead. It was a weird time, you posted the word "God" and it was pretty much universally accepted accross this website that you were referring to PvD. But you istened to radio one and they would be like "he plays trance, if you're into that sort of thing", wording it as if it was some sort of dirty fetish or something that only wierd people get into.

I think we underestimate how much of this decline was caused by things that are outside of our own control though. Trance was pretty much ridiculed into the shadows by the big dj's of other styles. The economy was much stronger and trance made a great celebratory kind of music that was more appropriate for the mindset of people in 1999 than it is for people today. There were massive marketing campaigns that just trashed on the music because they thought we looked stupid, at a time when we decided to stop caring about how we looked. Sure the music went down hill as well, but that was partially a result of these changing trends and marketing campaigns which puched people into favoring a different sound which alienated alot of us who were happy with the way the sounds were going before external forces intervened.

It happens to all music though, this little scene of ours is just a weird mix of passion, fashion, fads, money, drugs, sex, technology and people of all sorts, nobody knows whats going on.

I would say this could easily be a 1999 track. It simple but massive.
Is has one of the most uplifting melodies of Trance tracks.
The distortioned sound, I haven't heard for several years, is amazing. And the bass........

So, to me even in 2006 trance is still alive and kickin'

By the way. How many amazing tracks you need to say that Trance is (still) Alive (again)? 10, 25, 50, 100....
