Bob: "Who's your favorite DJ?"

Bill: "DJ [insert name here]!"

Bob: "What type of music does DJ [insert name here] play?"

Bill: "Good music!"

Bob: "Hmm. Okay, whose tracks does he play?"

Bill: "[List of artists that Bob has never heard of.]"

Bob: "What kind of music do those artists make?"

Bill: "Good music!"

Bob: "..."

exactly
since music as in any form of art is subjective to the person viewing/listing to it, we should be able to judge music by our own standards.Whats shit to you is good for me and vice versa. It doesn't matter as the love of music is knowing what you like and dont.Genres aren't totally stupid or unescessary, i'm just saying that to enjoy it you don't need a spin word.(ie:electro house, minimal(half the shit coming out as that really isn't))These are there mostly to keep shit organized and marketable plus a record company will label anything anyway to cash in on whatever is the current fad.Who cares what its called, the important thing is that you like it or you don't.
I still eat pills for breakfast.

+1

but there is house, trance, electro and prog that still mean something. (house lost his meaning cuz it's the current fad). i tought of techno but it's vast and unclear, cuz "dub techno" and detroit techno are completly different.

Evaluation of music's merit is subjective, but that has little relevance to genre classification.

Splitting music into genres is about making a shorthand description for tracks that allows you to tell quickly what sort of structure they have and what sorts of elements they probably have in them. There are lots of objective things to ask about a track -- Does it use a 303? Does it have a verse / bridge / chorus structure? Does it use a supersaw for a lead? What kind of scale does it use? Does it have vocals? Lyrics? -- and this is the kind of stuff that genre classifications address, ideally.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you only that i think some of what you mention can cause more problems than anything else sometimes.I'm not saying labeling a sound is wrong, its a choice...accepting whatever a record exec tells you it is to get bandwagon jumpers to buy it is just being a lemming. And my last post was more from a dj example.

Take Steve Lawler:I have seen him labeled a Progressive Dj,a tribal Dj,an electro dj(ive even heard noobs call it minimal solely cuzz it went tisk tisk tisk claq..but you know what to them thats minimal and thats okay)...blah blah blah.He uses them all now(he isn't my favorite but just an example everyone knows and can relate to)so isnt he just a DJ that plays party music. It isnt a genre, but if labels started classing music as party music would it make it so?What happens if i want to listen to it at home.I hope my logic if any is apparent in this post, because i ate too many pills for breakfast:P

Genre names generally are not invented by record execs.

true, but some are and many songs are labeled things a certain way when they are sold even though they don't posess the simple attributes you refered to as being the way to identify.Formula killed Trance.
I'm not arguing anymore as my wrists hurt from typing due to lack of masturbation
good day sir

"trance has become lame"
"trance isn't fresh anymore"
"so hard to find quality tracks"

all shit i see on a frequent basis.Maybe limiting the genre by producing only things that can be accepted as it stounted its growth You would be suprised how many trance producers have pseudos with amazing tunes yet can't make quality trance anymore.Evolution...okay the pills kicked in i'm out of here before beetlejuice shows up

Yes Demoted you are right, I buy albums which says Trance in front... but when I open and listen to them, its all house shit inside.. I dont have much time and money to listen to everyone.. just keep the trance genre authentic. When you say its trance.. let it be trance! :\

good lad

tbh purple, say "oh you don't like me" or whatever you want, the simple fact is that today you have to spend the time & effort researching an album before you buy it. If not, you don't deserve any sympathy or pity when you don't get what you want, how do you think all of the rest of us get on, pot luck ?
