I didn't read through the whole thread, not sure whether or not the use of arpeggiators has been mentioned for basslines.
I made a whole lot of MIDI clips of various bassline/ arpeggio patterns (basslines out of this or a similar thread, arpeggios out of MIDIs on nonstop2k), then trying to fit them into songs by moving the notes up, down etc...
Fiddly and time-consuming. Then I dug into the Arpache tools in Cubase and noticed - hey! You can grab MIDI clips and drop them into Arpache! Now, if I want to preview a certain trance pattern, I don't have to use the actual MIDI clips anymore and move them around. Arpache automatically applies the pattern to the notes/chords you want to apply them to.
I'm sure a heap of arpeggiators allow you to simply drag in MIDI patterns. I have around 70 cool patterns all lined up, that way it's such a breeze to just cycle through them and quickly find patterns that groove with the song. Once you've found one, you can either use the arpeggiator or find and use the original MIDI clip and tweak it (I kinda like having all the notes displayed, once the song is finished. It means I can quickly create a MIDI file and have all the information for each track.)
So there you go. I heartily recommend arpeggiators for basslines!
