I think the people who are the most vocal actually have the most experience deejaying out, and that's because they know how hard great deejays work, how much they love hunting for tracks, how much they love sharing their discoveries with others, and they know exactly how to critique another set.

deadmau5, you're a producer, and you were given the slot by tong. why not treat the whole EM as one big, composed, production, instead of a DJ set. The reviews all seem to indicate that this isn't your thing, yet your sales and the hype on your live show indicates you're a monster producer, regardless of one's philosophy on music. It seems given the opportunity you might have done something more ambitious, but I'm sure it will work out for you either way...

But why don't you take music seriously? What matters to you? Is there anything you DO take seriously? When you're irrelevant do you want to be remembered as the guy with the red suit and mousehead that made all those disposable eighth note tracks in the first decade of the milliennium?

Your replies in this thread seem to be just like your tracks - parodies, faux-levity used to mask actual substance.

Just saying - seems like you have more talent than this and I can't see how you could be happy forever in the circus, unless you're really just in it for $$.

I think most of your haters hate for your attitude, which comes across as an arrogant detached accomplishment

If the opportunity cost of a Deadmau5 EM was a Danny Howells EM... I'm not sure who I'd rather shoot in the face: Deadmau5 for selfishly playing a compilation rather than an actual mix (would have been too much to expect for him to put some thought and/or effort into the tracklisting), or Pete Tong for booking such predictable shit.

Doesn't matter if you like the tracks. There was obviously no effort put into this particular set at all.

also, joel/deadmau5, if you are still reading:

did you use the same live setup that you use in your live shows (monome, lemur, efx, djm800) to record this mix? or was it the sort of thing where you made some pancakes and then arranged some of your loops and hit render?

the videos of your live show are pretty good even if the music's not my thing - not sure what you're doing with the lemur - do you tweak your synths and do piano rolls with it?

also i have to say i am extremely jealous

maybe not for that exact crowd or venue but i would love to subsist by making music.

After reading this thread I'm passing the blame over to Pete. Since the show usually features someone who is primarily a DJ we expect a DJ set when you listen to the EM. Obviously if you ask someone who is primarily a producer to do put together a DJ set you are not going to end up with something comparable to what someone like Howells is going to give you. You are going to end up with a compilation and that is what we have here. That is why I don't call a painter when I have a plumbing problem. It's Tong's fault, or hell maybe it is our fault for always expecting the EM to be a DJ set. And I have to agree with mau5, if Tong calls I sure as fuck wouldn't say no to him.

from a video i saw of him it seems that he's doing a little more than deejaying, though

it seems like he's trying the live thing, and it is a fucking hard thing to do well, so you have to give some respect regardless of what you think of the music. though there is a lot of pioneer EFX lol

now, whether or not this is what he did for his EM is anyone's guess. i haven't listened so I don't know what it sounds like.

Of course...what I mean is...dropping a few other people's tracks in Live and playing them is not that hard.
