Your statements reflect the sentiments that anybody who cannot afford to purchase a vinyl or CD of a particular artist should be denied the right to listen to that artist.

There's a HUGE difference between listening to and owning a recording. If you wanna listen, go to a club or listen to the radio (internet radio included.)

PLEASE! It's NOT gonna get any smaller...

I'm gonna post a response to all to clarify my response to this answer, which is yes and no.

Yes, it is. The already small trance community relies largely on mp3 to keep up with the current tracks and the current hot producers. Without mp3 access, this community will decrease drastically. Maybe in YOUR time before mp3 and ogg and whatever, most had to rely on purchasing the track to hear it. Times change. As soon as I have the money to purchase tables and vinyl, I will (ask Mr. Richmann, we talk quite frequently). I hope to some day be able to buy many of the tracks I know and love, but for now I must rely on mp3 to enjoy the music I have come to love. Again, I guess my priorities are out of line. I shouldn't be entitled to listen to the music I love so much because I don't have the disposable income to spend on the vinyl.

This argument is getting old. You know my view. I'll still be @ Plush @ Quest to watch you spin. I respect you, I just don't entirely agree with you.

I need to clarify a few things about my position on mp3 sharing, because it seems like some are confused about which kind of mp3's I'm speaking of. I see a few different categories:

1. Full rips of individual songs

I am ABSOLUTELY 100% AGAINST the sharing of full rips, and I think this has already been established. I'll concede that some on TA have good intentions when it comes to acquiring full rips, there are a SIGNIFICANT number of people downloading full rips for the intention of using them with some of the DJ tools like Final Scratch and on DJ CD players like the CDJ-1000. These are the ones that you ought to be directing your flames towards, as they're the ones that are spoiling it for you.

The sharing of full rips DOES directly impact the sales of vinyl records and artist albums because of those who steal these songs. If someone has a rip on CD to use with their DJ CD player, they're NOT gonna go out and buy the vinyl. Same thing with an artist album, if they acquire the songs they like from the given album, they're NOT gonna buy the CD or multipack vinyl.

2. Full rips of individual songs from artists who've given permission to share

Places like MP3.com come to mind, and I think the sharing of mp3's like these is somewhat OK, but would rather direct someone to the official point to download them, rather than use a peer-to-peer client (I bring this up because I'd found some of my own productions on Napster and while I was initially excited, I soon realized that if someone was getting my tunes thru Napster, then I'd be missing out on increasing my listens count which has an impact on the "Payback For Playback" system results.)

If an artist that has retained the rights to his song declares that anyone can share the artists music as they see fit, then by all means it's fair game (unfortunately record labels rarely let the artists retain the rights to the recordings, so this would be rare...)

3. Rips off mix CD's that contains snippets of other songs in the beginning and end (or songs dissected from livesets.)

I'm not really thrilled with the idea of the sharing of these, as they do have an impact on CD sales, but I'm not gonna get too bent out of shape over it because it's not a 100% reproduction and they can't be used on burnt CD's for use with FinalScratch, etc.

It's kind of ironic that had the title of this thread not contain the 'full rip' phrase and people were talking about sharing mp3's from DJ mixes, then I probably never would have gotten involved in this thread...

4. Non-commercial DJ mixes/livesets/netradio broadcasts

All fair game IMO. These are a great way to listen to different tracks that's not gonna negatively impact vinyl single and artist album sales (it's enitrely likely that these SPUR sales) and is also not likely going to detract significantly from mix CD sales.

***********************************************************

So to now answer Bobby's question: if you don't have the money to afford to buy what you want to hear, try option 4. There are plenty of netradio broadcasts where you can hear the latest in trance music, and there are TONS of livesets floating around that contain 99% of the tunes that have been requested in this thread. I'm not gonna endorse it, but option 3 could be used in a pinch.

If neither of these are good enough for ya, well... TOUGH! Life ain't fair sometimes, and we can't always get what we want, so we're forced to make due with what we got. If it truly is about the music, then an incomplete version of the song with the bulk of the content should suffice. If you really MUST have that full rip, then go buy it... and if you can't afford it, well... I'm sorry to say it, but like I said before... TOUGH!

OK, so you're paying $30+ and you're gonna complain about a $2 difference on ONE of CD's I acquired at that price? I'm about 90% positive that $21.99 was the most expensive Trancemaster comp I bought at the shop I now work for.

As long as there have been DJ stores around here, there have been higher quality CD's available than what you would find at your local mall's chain store.

As well, theres the internet, where its easier to find those rare imports , or maybe theres a better Import CD store around your town. Common sense, ooor, where you live is pretty much not as trancey, or not as CLUBBY. I live in Miami

We sell (or used to sell) more than just trance CD's ya know... it's taken quite a while to sell thru the CD's we've had, trance, techno, and house. Most of what comes thru and sells now is just local DJ mix CD's...

OK, so you're in Miami? Then you're getting screwed because I've been to Miami and bought a THREE CD Trancemaster comp (V22) there a few years ago for $25.99!!! Maybe you need to shop around more or stop exaggerating how much they cost down there?

FYI, I bought that comp at Grooveman Music, 1543 Washington Ave, South Beach. Maybe you ought to take a trip over there, assuming it's not gone out of business.
