By the way. How many amazing tracks you need to say that Trance is (still) Alive (again)? 10, 25, 50, 100....
Are you looking hard enough?

well, first off it's nice to have more than one every month or every 2 months. Secondly, when you've got no trance night to go out to because the nights shut down due to lack of support, and when people quit playing/producing or switch to another genre due to lack of support/appreciation, then regardless of what YOU are finding or want to believe you're going to be stuck to enjoying a trance scene that consists mainly of your bedroom and your computer.

If you happen to live in europe/uk in places where things are at their best, then consider yourself lucky. But for the rest of the world it's a different reality.

Believe me, I am 32 years old, experienced it all. Here in Europe that won't happen. Add if it happens, I'll be walking with a stick.

So, like you mention, I'm lucky.

If I had to guess I would say at least 3 - 5 every month, and they cant be too obscure because like it or not much of the appeal of a tune for a crowd is lost if they don't recognize it. Unfortunately they have to be somewhat easy to find or there wont be enough people who find them to make a big enough crowd for a decent party.

Yeah ok. 2006 trance is dead? nah

One song: Armin Van Buuren - Sail

What makes trance, trance is emotion it brings to you as you listen. When I listen to Sail, it uses alot of minor and major chords that really send you into that trance state.

I must admit that there is a lot of SHIT out there called trance as of these days. But I believe that trance lives on and is actually greater than it has ever been before.

When I listne to 1999-2003 stuff, it jsut doesnt have the energy that trance has today. Due to software and computers being able to handle more effects and instruments playing at one time, trance has been able to reach energy levels in the sound that they couldnt in 1999

Trance has CHANGED. Trance LIVES on. It has not DIED. There are actually alot more people getting into trance these days. Sure there is an extremely distinctive difference of trance in the 90's and todays trance, but EVERY genre changes and evolves. Listen to hip-hop when it first started, then listne to it now. Difference much? OF COURSE. Cause if it still sounded the same, there would be nothing new to listne to.

Now i know that trance sounds alot the same nowadays, but it did back in 1999 too. Cause uhh yeah let's jsut talk about the "Supersaw." Every single damn song had a saw in it in 1999. I'm not sayin it to bash them, but nowadays trance is doing something different and takes you to differnet places like in Tiesto's Acient History track. That song took me to a Jungle setting where it would seem that you could be hunting tigers with a tribe of indians or something. Trance is doing differnet thigs these days then the same shit over nad over.

I really liked Tiesto's Nyana CDs because it took trance to a differnet level. There was rarely a supersaw lead in those CDs.
ASOT 2006 CD 2: In The Club really hit with some really good pumping Trance tracks.

I think DJ Nemesis is on crack. honestly. He speak about "taking a step outside" and shit, but I honestly dont think he has practiced what he is preaching. Cause if he did, then he wouldn't be arguing this at all. Trance is still very much alive and still kickin. It's jsut different than it used to be. And if he knew anything than he'd know that trance actually appeals to a larger crowd now then it ever has before.

So everyone, take a steop outside...a step into trance.

And all hail Armin Van Buuren's track Sail. I basically creamed my pants the first time i heard it.

No way am I reading through all the replies right now (maybe later) but the problem as I see it is basically lack of creativity in the scene.

The one thing that strikes me as the major difference between electronic music 10 years ago and electronic music now was that back then, everyone was always talking about the future, the future of music and the possibilities. Now you hardly ever hear that. People are either living in the past or too much in the present, no one thinks about what's possible for the future any more. No one wants to create new sounds and be the initiator of the next big style. Look at all the great genres that were invented in the 70s (disco, industrial) and 80s (techno, house, electro) and 90s (trance, hardcore, DNB) and compare that to what's come out in the 00s (raggaeton, hardstyle, makina)... it doesn't even come close.

I don't know why electronic music started off so good and suddenly came to a halt creativity-wise in 2000 (I think this would make a great discussion), but maybe it is all the DJ worship. That DJ list has barely changed in the last 6 years and you just can't rely on the same dozen or so people to be introducing the majority of new material into the scene. We need to change it up a bit. Cause right now it's stale, stagnated, nothing new - that's what's killing the music.

My $2.00.

Ok reading into this a little further... the whole amateur thing mentioned a few pages back has nothing to do with it. A lot of electronic music was founded by amateur musicians who really didn't know much about what they were doing, just fooling around and happily came upon something that sounded new and great. That was a great thing because anybody could just go home and produce their own tracks, then give it to a DJ to play and see how the crowd responded. If it was close, but not quite great, it just inspired them to try harder. Even more than that, it inspired others who thought they could do better to start making their own music! So the whole professionalism vs amateurism argument is completely invalid I think. I for one think amateur musicians are great for the music scene.

^^^^^ agreed

Trance will always be alive , its the quality of the tracks have gone down hill , its needs to freshen up.

When you go to buy records(or digital downloads) these days how many do you buy? as compared to a few years ago?

For me probably buy 1-3 tracks a month these days, use to be 20-30 tracks.

Sadly trance is such a dirty word these days but it will never die out completely.

I recommend you to listen to trance earlier than 1999. IMO the 1999 era is very overhyped. The best trance was produced during 1990-1997. And it didn't lacked any energy back then.

Hmm, yes and no. IMO trance before 1999 is the most original trance; the synths still sound fresh and energetic. You're really hearing the effort to create an energetic atmosphere. When listening to trance now you already have the feeling you've heard it somewhere before, but still I like to listen to it... Because it's produced on a high standard of technical level. Some of the early trance-tracks are just horrible to play out loud. Also much of the trance before 1996 is more like "rave" and hasn't that much in common with the supersaw-trance which mainstream trance has evolved into.

I can still listen to trance, but I combine it more and more with prog and psy nowadays, but I can't imagine to abandon mainstream trance completely

Comment to the posts above: I think "Armin Van Buuren - Sail" shows what's WRONG with trance nowadays, hell what kind of ugly, unoriginal distorted track is that . It uses 4 lowering notes, that's plain afwul. Has Armin forgot to write melodies or what? It's hard to believe he's the one who wrote communication, his only quality tune

One more final thought I have to contribute: as ironic as posting this is, there needs to be a lot less talk about this sort of thing and more action. If you look back to the acid house explosion of 88/89 you notice there were hardly any magazines or documentation of the scene made in those years, because everyone was having way too much fun to sit and write stuff down. Being an armchair raver doesn't solve anything. When you're standing back criticizing what's happening around you, you're not really doing anything, you're just commenting on what other people are doing. People need to get more involved, even if it's just showing up for parties.

Also note that I haven't made any comments about trance specifically, because I think the problem discussed in this thread relates to a much larger part of electronic music than just trance.

I'm not referring to those "rave" sounda style stuff which Bonzai and some other labels released in early 90s. I'm refering to the stuff which Eye Q, Superstition and MFS released. Those are tunes which still today sound great on a loud sound system.

Ok first off, you're an idiot. Second off, see first point.

now that we've got that out of the way..
How old are you? honestly. I have a hard time believing you're even legal to get into clubs, because if you were a regular in the club scene you'd probably know a bit more about exactly how "popular" trance is and the amount of support it gets.

Guess what sherlock, I took a step outside into trance 2 weeks ago.. on a saturday night in the biggest city in western canada.. on a long weekend where everyone's celebrating Canada day.. to see Scott Bond the man behind the Gatecrasher legend. 30 people on the dancefloor maximum. Since that night I have found out that the saturday weekly trance night is no more. Done. We have not one trance night in this city now. They are all house, progressive, or electro. Last time Scott Bond was here around 4 years ago there were over 600 people packed into the club and it was one big night.

Of course according to you I'm supposed to be stepping outside and seeing the amazing popularity of trance and great weekly trance nights full of lots of stoked people.. combined with a regular smattering of great trance guest djs coming through. And apparently when I mention the word trance I'm not supposed to see people cringe.

When the hell are some people going to realize that just because you got Armin's new cd/radio show episode/track and love it and pump it loud and dance around your room and think it's the best ever does NOT mean that the trance scene is doing great!

I don't know what you've been listening to but it's sure not the right places. Go and listen to half the tracks I mentioned in my previous post and then tell me that the current trance has more energy or magic to it. Lol. And what we are hearing these days is not the product of revolutionary new computers or software that has come out since 4 years ago. What we are hearing a whole lot of is buddy from down the street who downloaded reason/fruity loops etc and is putting out tracks now and trying to follow someone else in order to hope for the same success they got. Aside from that, to the talented/experienced producers.. the new software has just made it a bit easier and more convenient to make tracks. People aren't pushing the amount of effects or instruments played at one time into any new area than 4 years ago. The quality of your music isn't proportionally increased with the amount of instruments and fx you can fit into a track. That's usually called overprocessed or too cluttered & busy of a track!

quote:
But I believe that trance lives on and is actually greater than it has ever been before.
Trance has CHANGED. Trance LIVES on. It has not DIED.

yes.. so great and popular that people treat it like a bad word and many people avoid it like the plague. Plus threads popping up on a regular basis about the quality of trance and the state of things.

quote:

And all hail Armin Van Buuren's track Sail. I basically creamed my pants the first time i heard it.

Yes.. all Hail Armin, saviour to us all. I have all 257 episodes of A State Of Trance on my hard drive which I listen to in my house every day and rejoice about how great trance is doing.

The first step always, is being able to SEE and ACKNOWLEDGE the problem. This thread is not reaching towards 10,000 views from trance being better than ever.
