This was my fave from Hot Docs last year and at the end all I could think of is that the truth really is stranger than fiction. The documentary makers did a q&a and explained that they couldn't believe the story when it was first brought to them. And as they uncovered more material their thought was - how on earth could they do this and get away with it?? But they did.

Highly recommended.

I believe these personal favourites have yet to be mentioned:

'The People's Century'. An epic 26-parter that wonderfully charts the history of the last century, using the first-hand recollections of the people whose lives were affected by the developments. It rightly won an international Emmy.

Simon Schama's 'A History of Britain'. It does exactly what it says on the tin, right the way back to the Stone Age, in 3100 BC. It was so good that I had to buy the DVD set.

Michael Palin's (the former Monty Python) travel doc's, including 'Around the World in 80 Days', 'Pole to Pole', 'Full Circle', 'Hemingway Adventure', 'Sahara' and 'New Europe'. His quirky and down-to-earth sense of humour is a breath air compared to some more aloof and patronising travel guides.

'Touching the Void'. My mates and I watched this by accident, as there was no way that we went to the cinema to watch a sodding documentary. I persuaded them to stay, and do not regret it for a second. Truly life-affirming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjD6Y_YMxZg

'The Civil War', by Ken Burns. A simply majestic piece of work. The first documentary that I was truly engrossed by as a kid, and probably the first time that I regularly watched something on the TV that was not a cartoon! [[ LINK REMOVED ]]


'The World at War'. Laurence Olivier's narration is spellbinding. It was voted the Britain's 19th greatest ever television programme.

Generally, the BBC and PBS consistently make superb doc's. A great narrator and musical scores seems to enhance the pleasure of watching a documentary so much.

'Pedigree Dogs Exposed'...I was completely clueless about this issue. Who would have thought that 'pedigree' dogs would be so disease-riddled and have so many abnormalites? In the UK, it was a real eye-opener, and there was quite a public backlash against dog shows such as Crufts, with independent investigations commissioned and the BBC ending their coverage of the show.
