i think most societies have incorporated some form of repression of women's sexuality into their societies. with islam it is (in some cases) female circumcision/exision or wearing a headscarf or having to be escorted by a male to avoid being stoned, raped or harrassed. with christianity it is original sin, and the perpetual image of the virgin/temptress. there is no inbetween. i think as women, we hold the key to sustaining human life, and men were/are afraid enough of that to think to hold women back, to treat them like objects, to demean their existence, when in reality, without women, they wouldn't be here! i know you can turn that around and say women need men too, but honestly, we only need you for about 30 minutes, then it's all on us. did you know i think it's switzerland that only just granted women the right to vote in the 70s?! can you believe that? |
Female sexuality is one of the most feared things by anti-modernists, because it implies that females can choose their mates and thus that men aren't dominating their relations. It is also, depending on how presented, a tad to the unnatural side, since women are generally pictured as less-desiring (birth control, too, is unnatural, and has changed many things). The consequences relating to sex for women these days are much less than was for previous generations, so it's not surprising that women opt to allow for a little more freedom in their sexual expression. Men also take very harshly to the fear of no longer being necessary.
You hold a feminist viewpoint when it comes to the who needs who argument (this stance is the reason a lot of men hate feminists, and some of the roots of misogyny). Women and men both need each other to solve the inherent problem of loneliness to our existing; from a biological standpoint women need maybe one man per ten women, but how many women all want to settle for one man? Competition among women for men is a very fierce battle, and can be just as animalistic as men competing for women (how many women have you seen flip because another girl was flirting with her man?). Men fight more of the wars and engender more of the competitive nature of humanity than women, and while this has led to all sorts of conflict, it's also a great source of the progress we've made as a species.
If you look at statistics regarding cheating, you can see that almost as many women cheat in relationships as men. Clearly, women get something important from their relations with men.

Eh, I'm not so "creeped out" about transsexuality in the way that a lot of people seem to be. It's just one of the more extreme versions of the (seemingly universal) human desire to change one's body in a way that one finds satisfying. Still, in the case of sexual interaction with a person, I would (being straight) find the thought that the person used to have a penis kind of "unsettling."

Understandably. I've seen plenty of men and women react very negatively over the years.. Mostly I think it's because it makes people confront what they consider a gender to be, something that normally they'd never think about because they consider things with vaginas women and penises men. There is a profound worry that they might actually be attracted to this other thing, and what that might make them in terms of their sexual orientation.
There's still the problem of people who are born with no specified gender too, due usually to genetic abnormalities or chemical exposure, something that's pretty much been ignored up until recently. Whenever this would happen in the past, they'd usually be assigned some sort of gender and live as that, but it's increasingly becoming an option for such people these days to live as a sort of inbetween.
