Not a philosophy major (I agree with you on that), I'm a Computational Media major.

If you don't know what that is, go here: http://lcc.gatech.edu/compumedia/?page_id=9

I wasn't being completely serious, I do agree with you, but I think media studies in particular are becoming increasingly important in today's society, and will probably continue to do so.

Actually, maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by "media", who knows.

Media Studies here generally means a skin-deep look at the TV, film, music, radio, etc. industries. It's what's people who want to get into TV or radio generally take and, looking at the work of my friends who have taken it, it's the softest degree imaginable. Zild would probably vomit.

This would be the equivalent to our Journalism or Communications degrees. Yes, this has the same connotation. That it is basically a lazy approach to getting a degree basically.

Ah, well my degree is somewhat similar, although we're mostly just focused on using computers as a creative medium. It's a really broad major though and you can really specialize in whatever it is you want.

I disagree, some philosophy is quite difficult to understand due to the extreme abstract reasoning involved, try reading Heidegger, or Whitehead, oreven some ancient greek philosopher like Epicurus or Aristotle. It can get very difficult to understand and ifyou trully master it, you can develope extremely good reasoning skills. True, the "Hard sciences" can be very difficult but they don't make you more clever no matter what.

No, but they make you do something useful.

yep and people who aren't clever won't ever finish in the first place... you have no idea how many people i know who used to be science majors who are now liberal arts/communications grads.

and most of those people were bio majors and we know getting a bio degree is a joke

I'm always annoyed by people who start one degree, then cancel it and start another... and da capo a few times.
OK, it's possible to realize that you've chosen the wrong one after one semester, but I'm more under the impression that lots of people don't give this enough tought and just study something, what their friends do, what they think is cool or whatever they can with their graduation.

I was about 3 semesters shy of a philosophy degree when I decided to switch majors. Hate that all you want, but I wanted to actually get something from my time and money.

Well, switching from philosophy is different of course.
But seriously, don't you regret the time you lost pursuing that first degree?
