Bill Starr's 5X5 routine

Registered: Feb 2005

i'm back into my gym routine (bill starr 5x5) and it feels fucking amazing lifting heavy weight. I gotta do more cardio tho but it's so boring...mehhh

Has anybody tried spinning? Running on the treadmill kills my knees and it's boring so any fun alternatives that are also kind on the knees?

don't run. You will never see any body builders running in the gym. Elipticals, bikes, and stairmasters ftw. That stairmaster will pwn u...in a good way. Also the 5x5 is an excellent routine, so stick with that for a good 2 months, and then switch it up once u start to plateau.

Its bad on the joints. It works great for cardio but at the cost of deteriorating your knees way before their time. You can get the same benefit from the other low impact machines. If you must run, I would focus on HIIT which is a cycle of running as fast as u can for about 1-3 mins then slowing back down to a jog for a few mins, then repeating. Try that 10 times if u want to give it a go!

To his defense, Trump didn't even really look like a bum.

Actually, that's a load of bullshit. Running DOES stress the joints more than say, biking. But it won't "fuck up your joints" unless you're constantly pushing yourself too far and hard (just like with any other exercise).

If your knees are already fucked up, then it would indeed be wise to get your cardio in some other way. But this whole stigma about "running will kill your joints!" has not been backed up by any credible evidence that I have seen (in fact, there is evidence that runners have joints that are just as healthy, if not healthier, than non-runners).

now that things in my life have settled down (a little bit)i'm really making it a goal to get to the gym 3-4x a week. mostly just for health reasons, to stay in shape...not looking to really "bulk up" or "slim down"....just want to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

oh, and i want to be able to do like 25 pullups in a row. i'm on 10 right now

edit,

pullups or chinups....whichever is the one where your hands are not inverted on the bar (i.e. hands not underhand position)

It depends what area's, if any, your looking to target when you exercise. Treadmill work is actually more beneficial than cycling for example if you want to lose some weight around the abdominal region, due to the constant twisting and turning you make your body perform through running technique. I've been running years and have never had any sore joints, although I did have a stress fracture, but that was because I had poor, worn running shoes with no support.

In fact, I recall seeing a very interesting program on History/Discovery/NatGeo (one of em) about how humans have evolved to be adept long distance runners. One of the researchers even went so far as to name humans as the best long distance running animals on the planet. They even suspected that early man would hunt by spreading out in groups of 3 or 4 and simply chasing an animal until it collapsed from exhaustion after so many miles, leaving it open for easy pickings.
