Nobody needs to be an encyclopedia after all

its just a matter of mislabeling. The only people talking about it, as "techno" are usually un-educated listeners, either talking positive or negative. I'm sure the positive talkers would like to label properly, especially if they're asking for some, and the negative talking people, should be able to properly label something their criticizing in the first place.

Like I said, it doesn't matter to me. Mislabeling is one of the many signs that its all still really underground. Again, its more of a focus towards those criticizing a music they can't even lable correctly. It really shows their knowledge on the entire subject in the first palce.

when someone hears a 4x4 beat pattern...
they just call it "techno" or "dance" music

it really does piss me off sometimes...
i'm just wondering... what was the cause of ppl calling trance music "techno music"??

isn't trance just as popular as techno?

Not to be off-topic but this situation is similar to the way the word "punk" is thrown around today. It could be traced back to mainstream outlets like MTV...all they have to do is make up a new label for something and all of a sudden millions of mindless idiots are out corrupting everything it has to do with.
Anyway, I always use the term 'electronic music' when I refer to the whole spectrum, I never used 'techno' and always have hated 'electronica' since I first heard it. Like someone else said, people who are uneducated aren't likely to know that techno doesn't describe it all like electronic music does.

but the thing is guys, we are all extreme fanatics when it comes to trance, house, techno, progressive.. whatever it be we are most probably some of the most clued up people there are maybe in the world when it comes to this.. but not everyone knows that this is called tech-trance and of thats progressive/tribal house

and as much as it may anger you, im sure you couldnt spit out all the different rock genres that there are amoungst the rock crowd.. just like when u hear some ta's saying 'oh fuck that shit rock music' it might be something completely different and you could equally be pissing off people who are rock fans.. so think before you bitch about people calling pvd techno and so on..

personally, im not one to criticize other music, and probably the last person to sit in the "I dont know a damn thing, but i'll act like I do" seat.

We must face the facts tho, this country is better off in the dark when it comes to electronic. Electronic has peaked its head out several times, some people took a bite, while most ignored. In the american music industry, the LAST thing you want is something at the top, because you can be sure it'll fall back to the bottom in no time, and pretty much never go back up.

Like I said before, all this mislabeling is all due to lack of education on the music. But I counter-attacked that with how it is also a positive thing, atleast in this country and with this mainstream music industry.

good point!

if i say i listen to techno, which i usually try to avoid doing, its because that *other* person is an idiot and wont know what im talking about unless i say that - or they will be even more of an asshole about it if i try to go above their heads.

if they are interested in what i like, then i continue trying to explain differences.

...oh! and dont assume that people in Europe necessarily know more about the genres just because thats where they developed and became popular (tho techno didnt only develop here). most of our beloved 'trance' here is just pop club music to them and nothing else. and outside of germany most peeps dont know shit about techno|

You're right. People that attend parties here only like to listen to the minimal no-melody-whatsoever techno and regard trance as too commercial pop music. At regular discos they only play the cheesiest of trance like Lasgo and Ian van Dahl, and even that is not played often. So there's a sort of unfulfilled gap between those two where trance should fall in. It's too technoish for those who attend discos while it's too "cheesy" for those who listen to techno.

hmm yes, but speaking from Sweden i would say it is the opposite - and that is possibly worse! we all know Sweden gave us ABBA and that just means that Swedes love cheesy disco music. so therefore the trance has that terrifying leaning here. tis a shame, but we get some ok djs comin thru|

Yeap, me too. Electronic music is most apropriate I think(spelling mistake?). And electronica just reminds me of high pitched sounds. Don't know why.

Re: The techno dilemma.........

It's true that most people here, like everywhere, get confused about "techno", but I'm not sure I agree with what you say about people in clubs here. In my local trance club I've often talked to people afterwards waiting for a taxi when everyone is totally mashed and most of the time they talk about Liebing and Beyer and so on. Most of them say they don't like it but they all know what it is.

If you talk to the charvas that might be a different story but seriously, speak to clubbers and you might find that many know more than you think.

In Berlin half the people I spoke to were into techno! (mind you this was the week after the love parade so the city was still packed with electronic music fans).
