but apparently we have to believe, even if it's in ourselves. that's why i stopped labelling myself as an atheist. agnosticism is far more like it, but at the same time, still unsatisfying. the best word for what you're thinking of is mayavadi which is an old scripture word for impersonalist. the definition is precise enough to identify a single man, and broad enough to include something as vast as buddhism.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being religious, or believing in god/dess, I think the problems start when you get *organized religion*, that's where you start getting this mind control, you have to convert people, those other people who have a different interpretation of god/dess and should be killed BS.

Personally, I'm agnostic, bordering on deism (Voltaire: God created the universe and buggered off, and doesn't give a shit about us, no afterlife, etc.)

I think Socrates said something to the effect of "You don't even understand *this* life, why worry about what comes afterwards?" to one of his students, and that's basically my take on it...I've got enough things to worry about with adding religion to the list.

Thats one of the most ignorant posts ive ever read on TA.com Not only did u probably just offend everyone that follows a religion, but the post in itself was completely stupid in that u hav no evidence at all that there is a god out there or not, so who the fuck are u to say they are small minded.

I am not a religious person myself, and i dont believe there is a god. However, i do believe that we are not alone in the universe, and that there is probably a much higher life form out there than us.. (Like the Q in star trek )

Untrue. Just because don't understand atheism, and give it a pseudo-definition doesn't mean that their definition is right. Atheist - One who does not believe in any god or gods. Whether this is what the mass accepts or not, it is still true.

see, here we start getting very philosophical because i can throw at you the neizschean notion that each man is his own god. or the idea that gibson brought about saying that god is a mutual being created by a mass psychology.

also, what the mass accepts is always the truth. why do you think they say that the customer is always right?

The only way you can be certain something does not exist is if it has contradictory properties, such as a square circle. So, unless you can show what contradictory properties all gods and goddesses have, atheism is as irrational a position as traditional theism.

Agnosticism, which is essentially the acceptance of the simple fact that one cannot obtain sufficient evidence to answer every question, is really the only rational doctrine of belief.

I'm more agnostic, mainly due to practical logic, I simply dont know much about this universe, nor wish to profess such knowledge which I do not have.

However, Hermetic philosophy is *very* interesting. I like that one the most.

Who am I to say there is or isn't a god. I'm not gonna label myself Atheist and believe there's no such thing as god b/c there's been events out there that seem too weird to happen for me to deny God's existance yet sometimes I'll be fuck this n fuck that, God damnit blabalbalabla.
