It doesn't take over anything if you know what you're doing.

i did the EXACT same thing as Geed...

i had win98, then switched to winxp, then i switched to win2k... haven't looked back since..

winxp is just too fancy... slows the computer down to shit... and of course you say "if your computer can't handle it, don't use it" but the point is, ANY computer will run so much better without all the extra xp garbage... plus there are too many programs that still aren't fully compatible with winxp...

win2k is great, plus with the right tweaking, you can get everything to look just as good as XP anyways...

My XP experience:

-Use a CD-Key that is less-commonly known. I've done this and experience no problems getting upgrades.

-Turn off all that fancy visual enhancement crap (i.e. alpha-blending transparent highlights). On an older machine - it can make a significant difference!

-Use the windows classic theme. The default blue theme is too much of an ackward leap from win98/2k

-Anything below 256 MB of RAM will sour your experience

-The reliability of WinXP far outweighs any incompatibility i now have with older software.

i just installed XP pro + all the updates and stuff.. and i have to say i fekkin love it

installation was the best thing since sliced bread.. no hours of fuckin around with drivers that should work but dont, did everything itself! incredibly stable.. no total system fuckage when one program dies, it just sorts it out... looks a lot nicer, and once uve got everything set up how u want it, it runs as smooth as a polished babies arse.

and the shiny taskbar... oooo

IMHO Win XP is shit, I made the mistake of putting it on my 120 gig HD and I've been completely unhappy with it. The features it offers are completely useless to me and it's a resource hog.

I guess how much you'll like it will depend on what you're using your computer for, but in my experience Windows 98 is still just fine. Frankly, if all my software wasn't only good for Win 98 and up I'd still be running Win 3.1 and DOS 7.

I'm getting a new box put together by a friend soon, and I'm going to have that loaded with Win 98 as well, screw XP, all it does is slow down your system, and for what gain? Nothing practical that I can see...
