I play at 137-141 bpm, personally.

If you've noticed, here are the speeds of some famous sets, as indicated by my mixer, Gemini BPM-150:

1. Judge Jules live @ Qontact: 139
2. Kimball Collins' ICU Gen. Trance 2000: 137 (and that one kicks ass, despite the relatively "slower" tempo!)
3. Tiesto's "Summerbreeze": 139
4. Oakenfold's Tranceport I: 135-137 (it changes throughout)
5. Tiesto's Magik 5: 136
6. Tiesto's magik 6: 141 (the fastest trance set I have)

Also I prefer to have sets that have uniform BPM, but that's just me.
Is faster better than slower? Well, in the middle of the set, right around 12:00 , when everybody is on the dancefloor, you probably need to raise the pitch a little bit

Also I want to add:

Some trance music is for listening/relaxing, other trance music is for dancing. So the former category would probably have a slower tempo than the latter, and this is perfectly normal.

But one thing I don't like is trance being slow and AT THE SAME TIME cheesy... like ATB for instance, his accursed "9 pm" is like 130, and "Don't Stop" is 132, if I remember correctly. I wouldn't have a problem with cheesy trance (whether we can call it trance is another thread entirely) if it wasn't so slow!

Happy hardcore, which is very fast and exemplified by such people as DJ Hixxy for example, is also quite cheesy, but at least I can digest it because it's FAST, and that's a good thing!

It totally depends on what two (or three) songs that I'm mixing together and also what mood I'm trying to set. I have no set ways or rules to how a song is pitched.
