No question about it, iPod is the way to go, especially since the next generation iPods will be made available on Friday.

I had the Sony NZ-1, but returned it because it was such a hassle to transfer music to and from the unit. Transfer speeds were rather slow for my tastes as well.

oh yeah, its a real nuisance to wait 5 minutes to record 6 hours of music

MD is the way to go, you're not as limited with it as you are with an mp3 player... you can record to an MD from virtually any source, the quality is way better and if you get sick of what you have playing right now, just pop in another minidisc... the ONLY drawback of an MD that I can see are the moving parts and if its being dropped consistently, its more likely to break than an mp3 player... but i guess thats just like any other portable device, so.....

the best way to go for an all around MP3 player is the iPod.

hands down.

on no other platform can you fit so much on such a small device.
searching for songs takes seconds. it even has a calader organizer, clock, games, and who knows what other special goodness on the next line of ipods coming out.
my ipod is the first generation. it holds 4.5 gigs. I've upgraded the software on it to the newest batch (well not including whats on the next generation of iPods which came out like 2 days ago). and i've formated it so that it works with my PC which i have here at college with me instead of for my Mac which is at home.
anyway, go iPod. you won't be sorry. you can fit tons of live sets and such on it, and transfering takes seconds.
if you really really need a small mp3 player for some reason then there are some other options out there. the most you'll be able to fit on them is 128 MBs tho, so you will only get 1 or maybe 2 live sets on them, and most of them are USB connections so the transfer rate is longer.
i feel the iPod is small enough for my needs (much smaller and ergonomic than the Nomad Jukebox, which i had and shun now that i have an iPod).
I go running with the iPod all the time, it fits in my back pocket. its just as big as my wallet

if you wanna do recording (live sets and such), then i would suggest looking into a MD player

I got an I-River 256 MB and I advice you all NOT to buy it cause after 2 months it stopped working and I had to send it back to the shop I bought it from (it's still there).

Further I have the Creative jukebox 20GB. That works fine if you're not moving around a lot. Good sound quality, it's a little big though, and the earphone connection is a bit unstable, if it's moved a little sound only comes from right or left, which is annoying.

I don't know any of the others

I've got the 6 gig version of that, yea it's pretty big and quite heavy too. It's sound enough but skipping through & between tracks takes fucking ages (they might've improved it on this version I dunno). I'm sure there are better ones out there.

iPod seems the way to go....

Nomad Jukebox Zen

If it's size you're after Nomad is coming out with a new version of the Zen.
It's 60GB and it'll be $100 cheaper than a 30GB iPod.

Btw, that iMP-550 looks so sleek.
