By the way, I notice that the article didn't explain much, but I studied this case in a law class so here's a bit of background for any who are curious:
- Zundel operated a web site and distributed other kinds of propaganda (pamphlets etc.) as well, denying the holocaust and promoting other forms of anti-semitism.
- He was charged under a section of the criminal code (can't remember which number exactly) which primarily dealt with the publishing of false information. The section was usually used to deal with libel cases and was antiquated. The judges struck down the original case because the written law made no sense - not really because it was unconstitutional - the law also had nothing to do with prejudice, only falsified information.
- For the longest time, that case set a bad precedent and people have been getting the wrong idea from it. The government has now stepped in and taken a different approach to getting rid of him, which is a lot easier now than it was years ago because of his ties.
- Zundel was originally supposed to be extradited to Germany, which is quite different from simple deportation. He was to be sent back there to be tried there, because the German government was rather upset with him committing acts that they consider to be crimes and "hiding out" here in Canada. Canada's original decision not to extradite him pissed off a lot of other countries, so they are [hopefully] not going to make that mistake again.

Canada is very quickly becoming known as a haven for hate groups, terrorists, and fleeing criminals. Since Chretien hasn't done much to improve international relations, I think it's good that the justice system and immigration dept. has at least set a precedent that will improve this country's reputation.

By spreading the nature of his hate to the degree that he does it, I can certainly say it can be the equivalent of verbal premeditated murder. And your theory about him maybe being mentally ill..well lock him up in a padded room! We dont allow nut jobs to run around on the streets anyways, so regardless, he would have to be locked up.

And diginut is right, some countries were upset at canada's earlier decision not to extradite him. Canada is sought to be a very lenient country in terms of punishment...

Remember this is the man saying WHITE POWER and basically putting hate literature out saying the holocaust never happened and he has started numerous hate groups. He deserves everything he gets and frankly I don't want him in my country.

Yeah, thanks for clearing up the info about this Zundel guy, all I thought was that he was "badmouthing" Jews and suddenly gets deported for that.
