i am not sure it would be that much more painful to cut it off when it is already crushed and mangled under a boulder. Not to trivialize what he did by any means, buthe probably was already in a crapload of pain from when it fell on him.

well it was likely already crushed and may have been amputated later anyways if they had freed him. Still, having no bottom arm is better than being dead! Plus you could have easily packed it in snow for a few hours or so before you did the deed, it would numb it nicely.
Even still, that guy is a true legend indeed
Edit: And whats REALLY impressive is that after being stuck for 5 days, 2 of them without water, amputating his own arm, freeing himself, and applying first aid, he STILL rigged anchors and rope and fucking rapelled down to the canyon floor, and then began to hike to safety. Balls of steel, indeed!

UPDATED STORY: http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Central/...scue/index.html
They give more details here... the boulder weighed 800lbs, not 200. Apparantly he was pinned in a very narrow canyon, and the searchers say they would have never found him had he not helped himself. So after cutting off his own arm, he had to hike down the canyon, then rappell down 80 feet of sheer, vertical cliff. He hiked towards civilization when the search helicopter spotted him. With his arm still bleeding he walked himself into the chopper, was upright and alert during the ride, then when it landed at the hospital he got out of the chopper and walked himself to the ER! |
lol... I feel like a tiny, tiny boy compared to him. Insane.
