i mostly use my really good panasonic earphones which i got for Xmas last year RP-HC70 to be precise

Let me introduce you to the Klipsch Promedia GMX D-5.1

Klipsch are by far the best speakers for your PCs, I don't have this one but I have the older promedia 4.1 model.

pair of Mission 702e Floorstanding. Ideal budget speakers for my system. Connecting them up to a Cambridge A1Mk3 amp.

You guys probably ought to realize that you can't get 500 W true rms of output power from an amp that only takes 150 W of input power. If you have a 500 watt amp that cost $500 and you see on the specs that it operates at a much lower input power, you can rest assured it cannot deliver that much output at a constant rate - however, if you paid $1000 or more for that amp, you've probably got a good one. Those logitech speakers have great sound, but most of their marketing is bull and there is no way they can justify the price they charge.

Also, 500 watts of audio is less than 7 dB louder than 100 watts. That's not a hell of a lot when you're already at 90 dB.

THX certification is not hard to obtain, just expensive to pay for. That's why THX certified speakers cost more.

Finally, 150 or 250 W speakers are absolutely useless when your amp can only output say, 50 or 100 watts per channel.

What you want to be looking at is the efficiency (sometimes called sensitivity) of the speakers, which is a measure of how loud the speakers actually are at maximum rated power. Wide frequency response is also good. Watch where your money is going folks!

I have reasonably good speakers (120 watt front, 100 watt center and rear) from Sony but hooked up to a crappy old 50 W (minus subwoofer) Creative DTT2500 Amp. This was mainly because I planned to purchase a better amp but ran out of money. However, it still "shakes the floor" at less than half volume. My friend has some ridiculous crappy 3 W per channel onboard amplifier (hooked up to bigass speakers) that shakes the floor too. IMO, Klipsch makes the very best home speakers.

I have these hooked up to my computer. Got them from Dell as a free upgrade.

Altec Lansing ADA745 4.1 Surround Sound Speakers w/ Subwoofer

They're good enough for me right now.

Klipsch Promedia 4.1s. More bass than I could ever need. I have the sub under my desk and it's like my feet are in a wind tunnel. At any rate one complaint I do have about them is that my sub sometimes gets screwed up and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to fix it. I'll be using these until I can afford a $1000+ home system.

Yes they are:

Both the Creative and Klipsch loudspeaker systems are superior in clarity and depth compared to the Logitech Z-680, but just marginally so. As for sheer power and flexibility, however, the Z-680 is superior to the MegaWorks THX 5.1 550 and ProMedia 5.1, and on equal turf with the Klipsch 5.1 Digital Dream Multimedia System. Still, it's hard to beat the Z-680 if you want to support multiple game systems simultaneously or switch modes on the fly between digital and analog. When you add price to the mix, the Logitech Z-680s look even better.
