i would have to disagree with most of the above. Pioneer make fairly poor mixers and the vestax 175 isn't very good either. If you want a decent but cheap mixer go for the vestax pcv 003 i think it is, instead of a pioneer 300, and you'll save about $300, if you want 3 channel go for a vestax pcv 275, much better than the 175, and only a hundred bucks more or so. If you got the cash though go for an allen &heath, or rane, but otherwise, i would not recommend pioneer. Vestax make much better mixers at less cost. As for decks, stick with technics, best quality, and best resale value

but if you have money to burn buy a Allen Heath Xone 62 mixer, you can grab that for $3200 or there abouts! that mixer will do you for life! best ever!

Allen & Heath X ZONE 62 Mixer
4 music channels, 2 mic channels, built-in filter & balanced output
AU$2799

i'm pretty sure you can get discount on that as well.......

Ecler SMAC Pro 40
4 Channel, 8 input mixer with 3-way EQ, VCA fader, clean output and excellent gain structure. Ideal for clubs or pro's
AU$1389

haha, someone pointed out how cool these look

PIONEER DJM600
4 Ch. DJ mixer with built-in effects and sampler, plus balanced output.
AU$1999

there is nothing wrong with these!!

i wouldnt mind that valve mixer by stanton though

its in the order of $6K last time i checked :/

I just have a stanton rm3-s, haha, yer it may be crap, but its fine for in the bedroom, one day, ill get one of the above depending

but yer, if you are just starting out, no reason not to get cheaper stuff, just for a while.

get ortofon OM pro (S) cartridges, bloody good value for money there

.....and then theres records, damn it gets expensive..........

ok um a few questions.

1) EDIT: i should pay more attention.

2) i dont get channels, like if its got 8 inputs but 3 channels ? whats going on there ? u can plug 8 things into it ? and dont you only want 1 output ? or 2 i guess one for the headphones.

and 3) do u have to relearn to mix with different decks ? like djway said he is relearning on new decks, if thats the case id better get something standard then hey ?

i think ill go the str8-30's or maybe the next model up.. being uni student doesnt really earn me that much cash

cant really decide about a mixer tho. will probably have to get the cheapest. but i would like 3 inputs so i can get a sampler as well. altho i see that some mixers come with a sampler built into them.

hmm, will have to keep lookin around.

and err i live in northern nsw, so um the second hand market is quiet like what it would be in a city.

oh yeah venomdx if ya still wanna get rid of ur decks gimme a buzz. im not sure if ill be getting anything else real quick.

thanx for the help everyone.

my advice is...

if you are really serious about taking it up then you should get technics otherwise if your just gonna mess around and have some fun start off with cheap decks!

I won't rehash the TT or mixer comments, it's all been said.

I will say though that I checked al the types of headphones (HD25, HD25SP, 1200, 1210) and settled with the new pioneers. Got em for $260 which is 200 bucks less than the hd25's. At the moment I can't fault them. I prefer the larger ear cup and IMO there's no way the hd25s are worth $200 more, if any.

belt drive = stay away from.

belt driven turntables are not useful for djing (they are however great for other uses).

so you pretty much have to get direct drive.

hmm, my setup was about $2500 about 2 years go

2 x technics
rm3-s mixer
2 x ortofon pro

its fine.

sure i want more, but meh!

more moeny ouy spend on hardware, less on records.

ummmm

hows ruff cutz going ghostface?
still alive?

Alright! Get the Pioneer DJM600 90% of all venues convert back from the allan and heath to the djm600 and the pioneer is the easiest to use and best feeling of the controls knobs and faders etc. I personally own the djm600 and where ever i've played, they have it so it's like being at home for me. Don't buy anything other than the Technics 1200 mk2 they are everywhere and you may as well use what everyone is using. Vestax and others just have a theory on what decks should be like but technics are what turntables should be and they have been for many years.
Headphones are a personal choice and vary depending on your ability to monitor. Most dj's use the HD25 sennheisers except they output mid highs and hurt my ears when monitoring. I personally prefer the Sony MDR-V700 as they have a 50mm driver and the output is clear and distortion free at any level. The output capacity is 1000mW i think, from memory, it is double that of the sennheiser HD25. It means they can handle double the output load even at peak levels.

Ultimately it's what suits you and your budget not what we think, so get out there and start checking the shit out! If you need help buying and stuff pm me and i'll be glad to help.

BTW. I paid $1700 for my mixer mid last year and $800 each turntable as well. $309 for headphones

i can't beatmatch on these things!
they add so much emphasis on the bass to create a "bwuuuuuum bwuuuum bwuuuum" effect, i find it difficult to accurately distinguish the beats. sexiest dj phones i've layed my eyes on tho.
