Unfortunately, the speedometer only measures how fast the wheels are turning, so this won't work quite as well as you were hoping.

And cars do have electronically programmed maximum speeds, I forgot about that. The computers will literally cut the accelerator when you reach that speed, it's actually rather scary if you've ever tried it. But you could always "modify" that.

Actually it just stops the flow of gas into the injection system. That only occurs when you hit the redline on the Tachometer. IS the worst feeling when you are accelerating hard and (in my case cut off is 8500 rpm) and the gas gets cut. Its like an immediate jolt foreward b/c there is no more lateral acceleration.

Don't have injection or any computers on board. Just a good old plain carb.

Actually measuring the speed of a falling object is very easy. It can be done by monitoring air pressure change. Speed skydivers use such devices all the time. It's not too complicated to rig a car with one.

It is called a pico tube on an airplane i believe. What it does is measure the pressure against the device. The only problem with this is it will only give you your relative airspeed and not your actual.

I know of a guy who got his 2.0 Toyota Celica and raised it up on bricks and put toe boot to the board and only got 140 MPH. Suppose it's a fairly high speed, but ye'd expect a sporty car like that with no air resistance to go a little faster!
