Indeed!! Why can't they be like the gear on old "Mission Impossible" series then? Really be selfdestructive. "This will self destruct in 5 seconds.."

Yah did you read the article, its not a copy protection device its a way for disney to rent movies out to the consumers bypassing rental stores. The disc is only good for 2 days so they charge a small fee instead of the regular price to buy. pretty much its disney getting greedy they see how much money blockbuster is making and say hey why dont we F*ck them.

Note: I feel like im reading slashdot all of a sudden.l

Disney or any of the studios would never try to cut into the market for renting DVDS/Videos, because Blockbuster and the other big video chains make a lot of money for the studios.

If any studio tried to hurt the video store business they would face huge losses from video since obviously the likes of Blockbuster would boycott that studio.

Like the failed DIVX format once Blockbuster voiced its opinion that DIVX was a bad idea for the industry and that they would fight against it; then the DIVX format died a quick death.

Blockbuster has a big influence in the industry and studios listen to what they ask for or tell the studios to do. I can't see this changing for a long while yet since rental stores are far from being in trouble yet.

humm Thor I don't see your point I must be really stupid

what I mean is this isn't even proprietary

I can't say I know for a fact, but I'd imagine that parents tend to buy the Disney movies instead of renting them ( ever seen a family that has like ALL the Disney films ? ) so by doing this, trying to push for the rental of Disney films, are they not instead building themselves a market that does not already exist ? ( granted they don't really rent stuff already )

i think disney is going about this technology completely wrong

i think they should try to implement it into already existing rental formats

like say...the dvd will become unplayable after a week

so they can still capatilize on late charges, but if someone tries to take off with the movie then it will deture them since it will become useless in a week

then just find a way to re-activate the movie for the next person to rent

maybe by some sort of light or chemical or whatever (im no chemist) and it just reactivates the movie when its rented

im sure some people will learn how to reactivate it themselves, but if the method was difficult then those people would be kept to a minimum, and even then they would have to scam the movie in the first place

sort of like those ink security tags on clothes
they're not hard to get off, but they're enough of a deturant to keep shoplifting down...and even if you knew how to get them off you owuld have to steal the clothes first

i don't mind if blockbuster were to keep their current format though...this idea would just be a better moneymaker for both disney and blockbuster i think
