Kick the computer and tell it if it doesnt start working, you'll throw it out the window or something.

I would say at this point to save everything you need, or want, and reformat the drive. Doesn't take too long if you know what you are doing

Which operating system? If you want to replace a file in win98 you can start in msdos mode. XP/2K you can start with a bootdisk, and then replace the file.

hangover, I'm running Windows 98 Second Edition.
To use msdos mode though, I would need a real 'idiots' guide
on how to do that matey, I've learnt quite alot in the
last 2/3 years but nuffin about the programming side, unfortunately,
hence my probs.

Let's see if I remember
Go to the start menu and choose shutdown (?)
There should be several options, choose "start in msdos mode"

Another option is to reboot your computer and in the instant it says in the top of the screen "Starting MS DOS" or "Starting MS-Windows" to press shift-f5. It's a bit tricky so one way of accomplishing this is to keep hitting shift-f5 repeatedly from the beginning.

HTH...

when you go into dos
it'll be easy to copy the file

just first in windows save the .dll file somewhere easy to find, like right on the c:\

then when you're in dos this is what you'll type (the folders might be a bit wrong, i can't remember them exactly for win98 but you'll get the idea)...
(this is assuming you put the .dll file right on c:\)

copy c:\msvcrt.dll c:\windows\system32\msvcrt.dll

if that doesn't work, try putting "c:\windows\system32\" instead of "c:\windows\system32\msvcrt.dll"

its been a while since ive worked in dos

There is one issue involving the MSVCRT.dll error message which can be caused when certain Microsoft programs are installed (Microsoft Works Suite 99, Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 99 (US only), Microsoft Encarta Virtual Globe 99, Microsoft Graphics Studio Greetings 99 and maybe some others).

In such cases the file is overwritten by another file of a different version which can cause the problem. The Microsoft article Q221946 has instructions on downloading and applying the fix.

BTW, u need an IT guy not a programmer
