Disabling the Messenger service, which I repeat is NOT related to Windows or MSN Messenger, will stop you getting pop-ups like the one above.

The Messenger service is designed to be used to send administrative alerts and messages to users of a network - for whatever reason people are now using it to advertise directly to people's computers. NERD ALERT!

There's good news and bad news. The good news is that you can stop those pop-ups from appearing. The bad news is that I personally only know how to do it in Windows XP:

1. Go to 'Start' > 'Settings' > 'Control Panel'
2. Double-click 'Administrative Tools'
3. Double-click 'Services'
4. Locate 'Messenger', right-click it and click 'Properties'
5. First stop the service by clicking the 'Stop' button
6. Now select 'Disabled' from the 'Startup Type' drop-down menu
7. Click 'Apply' followed by 'OK'

Note that the 'Messenger' service, rather confusingly, isn't actually related to Windows (or MSN) Messenger. So disabling this service won't affect its functionality. It'll just stop those annoying pop-ups!

hey by gollie i think it worked
thanks a lot man

im so happy no more annoying pop ups

HAAAAAAAAAAR

dude if you don't know what you're talking about, i suggest you stfu. messanger service is for admins who need to send messages to users on a given network...

For example, "mandatory shutdown in 5 minutes" or "you have 10 pages left in your impression bank" and so on and so forth...

fk! at last a solution. this is caused by randomly hitting ports on ur ip that normally ur isp won't turn off. gonna give that solution a try and see if it works.

werd

blazed it: the messenger service just sends a text only message to a ip adress, so on the spammers computers it will just spend a message to each ip in a given range - ie 60.1.1.1 then 62.1.1.2 and so on
