A lot of the stuff I personally (remember personally)..find cheesy has been PLayed in clubs around Melbourne for the last couple of years and as a result trance hasnt been taken seriously as good dance music here for a while...the last time was probably back in the old mansion days...and that was back in the day when the trance wasnt seen as cheese and a track like Meet Her at The Love Parade could go to the top of the charts and yet still not be looked down on like a DJ Sammy track.
Now with the beginnings of a trance revival happening...I just think there has to be rOOm for the more serious side to it all...it will give a solid foundation...
Just some mid week ramblings for ya's

imo cheese is really just overcommercialised music with a target audience of young girls/guys who know only of "techno" music and not of all the other genres that come under what i call electronic music. Good examples are things like remixes of Kylie Minogues Cant get you out of my head put over New Order's Blue Monday. Cheese in my opinion is really just popular songs put over a danceable beat or electronic that has been commercialised far too much by record companies (can anyone say Darude's old days?)

simply put - cheese is the sort of shit that you will hear on fox, mmm, and nova - overplayed overcommercialised crap that people think is new

Lol I had a rude awakening 2 days ago when my alarm (radio) came on.

Nova announcer: okay maurine well I'm gonna play an awesome new track that has just hit #1 in the uk and all over europe's dance charts, and I want you to shake and have a dance to this great new track called "Tomcraft - Loneliness"

I almost coughed to death.

Wtf!

I mean it's kinda cheesey...Sure the vocals are so/so, but I've always quite enjoyed it. Puts a smile on my face.
....but I'd stay away from playing it in clubs now definately UNLESS it's a commercial club.

But god, can't wait to cruise past the glenferrie and see the drunken jocks singing karaoke.

nice thread.

as dave n dudikoff have pointed out, definition of cheese is pretty subjective. a techno or hardstyle listener, would classify our uplifting trance cheesy, while a listener to the uplifting stuff, would classify the same for euro trance [which i don't think anybody doubts].

personally, for me, the greatest factor which influences how fluffy or cheesy a tune is, are the the way the synths are used. in terms of the sound, and the melody in which they're encapsulated. both determine the depth of the tune, whether it was created for the sake of "catchy-ness" or with a greater meaning. followed by that are the vocals of the tune.

It's all a matter of interpretation and personal taste....there are tracks that I would have considered cheesey but you would consider absolute gems.....it's what you've been exposed to more or less that decides this for you.

For me it is in the melody, use of the synths, and if there are vocals I prefer them to be female and appealing (as in deep and sexy, not high pitched and squealy). Again, it's just what 'you' like and if you are a DJ you need to cater for everyone even if someone (or a group of people) in the crowd thinks it's cheese.

Chris

like it has been pointed out... one man's trash is another's treasure... labelling tracks as cheese is almost as bad as saying all prog tunes are the same...

Just because an artist seems to follow the same formula, it doesn't make it cheese. Why are ppl like Armin, Tiesto, PVD, etc allowed to have their own sound and stick to it, but the moment someone else does it, it's labelled cheese?

As for Southside Spinners - Luvstruck. Hmmm... This is one of the tracks which i fell in love with the first time I heard it, and I still love it?

There's a fine line there... Just because a song is popular, it shouldn't make it cheese. For instance, I don't believe Iio - Rapture is cheese at all, but it's VERY popular nonetheless...
