Well, the problem with that was that I was the only DJ, so i couldn't just say "If they dont like it, i'll stand down"
But i did it anyways, and was generally well accepted by 'the crowed' of about 40 people (others didn't like it, or weren't in the room)
Instead of selling out, i played tracks that are easy to enjoy when you're drunk. I didn't play alot of trance, cause there was a lack of that audience.
but my tracklist (all on CDR):
1. Dave Gahan - Dirty Sticky Floors (Junkie xl vocal)
2. Kaylab - Do not attempt
3. Gabriel & Dresden - Acid Elliot - > then they started to listen
4. Tomcraft - Loneliness (Klub Mix)
5. Andain - Summer Calling (Gabriel & Dresden remix)
6. Kamaya Painters - Wasteland
7. Scot Project - Future is now
8. Marco V - Godd
then i got pesterd by a few people for some gino beats (which i refused to play, so i settled for a few 'cheesy but good' songs:
9. Altitude - Altitude (S.H.O.K.K. remix)
10.Conjure One - Tears from the Moon (Tiesto remix)
11.Gouryella - Ligaya (Green Court remix)
-got bored, so i started playing quality again:
12.Romanthonys NightVision - Never Fuck (Pvd Casino Mix)
13.Mass Effect - Plasma
14.Darude - Serindepidy
15.DreamCatcher - I dont wana lose my way (Magik muzik mix)
by then i was too tired and they wanted to hear 50 Cent so i was like fuck it. took a bow, then had a few drinks
it was recorded too. i'm getting it later. |
50 cent, lol. dont those people know u cant match a fuking 50cent witha fuking darude beat, wat idiots they were. i cant belive wats happening in brampton these days.

It all boils down to what you want out of DJing. I believe that you have to pay your dues (and be lucky) to advance beyond the bedroom/friend's parties etc. This may mean playing pop, hip hop, whatever the mindless cattle are buying. It's kinda hard to "sell out" when you haven't made a name for yourself otherwise. If PVD started spinning hip hop because Death Row (god forbid) paid him a ton of money, THAT's selling out.
(Boring "back in my day" story) I busted my ass playing whatever for whoever. And this has gained me contacts, more gigs, free drinks, money, and experience. Yeah, you feel dumb playing 50 cent and all that other crap, but it nets you crowd experience, contacts, and broadens your mixing style. Hell, I learned how to mix highs from hip hop.
In the end, it is all your choice. If you have such a strong hatred of all things pop, and are willing to sacrifice money, experience, and contacts, then by all means stick to your convictions. Later on it may pay off, who knows? Otherwise, suck it up and try to have fun playing music people want to hear. In time, you will dictate what you play.
Just my opinion, hope this helps a bit.
