Piano/"keyboard" may help a little if you're trying to compose or produce, but what really helps if you're trying to come up with something original (i.e. in my case, the classic "okay, what am I supposed to do next" moment) is theory study, and also good experience with various styles (Indie for psy, Asian for chillout, African for tribal or electro types, modern jazz especially for all types, and others).
actually imo knowing the theory is good..however it restricts u to ur output cos u tend to stay within the boundries ...

Harmony only teaches you the rules, it's up to you to decide when and where to break them. Even the baroque composers didn't follow them strictly - it's like anything else in life, does a person just do what s/he's told, or go above and beyond? Besides which, the "rules" are different depending on what time period and geographic location the music is from.
Anyway, that's my 2c - I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a well-known producer out there who hasn't studied either classical or jazz harmony.
