From what I've heard many of the top DJ's are leaning more and more towards software as opposed to the hardsynths.

Static Revenger just sold his Korg on eBay if that's any kind of indication.

While you're talking about those type of software, id like to know something about instruments.

I have messed with Fruityloops TS404 a bit (along with filters), and ive come up with one or two synths that sound like (but is not close enough to) something usable for songs (producing a final version).

So id like to know if you know any forum, site, whatever dedicated to messing with instruments... like downloading wavs, or tutorial/howto to re-create a specific instrument by yourself by tweaking this and that plugin - regardless of the software used

I just did a quick search and found these links:

http://www.soniccontrol.com/cgi-bin.../ultimatebb.cgi

http://www.synthzone.com/news.htm

I'm not sure but it looks like it should help.

Does anyone here use Acid 3.0? I'm thinking about getting it.

what you need is VST plugins. these are instruments, usually synthetizers, that can be used with several audio programs (like Fruity), but not with Reason. some of these plugins are VERY powerful and can emulate the sound of hardware synths pretty well, if not make better sounds nowadays. I recomend getting the following VST's: Synth 1 (Free!), Pro 52/53, FM7, Albino, Absynth.

also if you want to enhance the sound of your synths, try adding some effects on the FX channel.

for more info about producing tools and producing tricks, check regularly the Production Studio forum here on TA, or try http://www.samplecity.net, great community of producers

FL Studio 4 and whatnot

If your an absolute beginner I would have to say go with FL Studio 4. Even a complete beginner can figure out how to lay down some pretty good beats. A friend of mine used to have a huge hardware setup in his basement that I tried to use (lets just say I wasn't too sucessful), but after using FL I actually have a pretty good idea of how all that stuff works now.

As for getting FL 4 for free...you could, but we arn't talking about Adobe Photoshop here. It's only $100 (which isn't exactly gonna put a huge dent in your wallet) and it's a lot easier to get the upgrades if your registered 'cause you just download them for free off the FL website. I guess it kinda depends on what you want to do exactly anyway. If you actually want to start producing music to sell you'll probably want to pay for FL so you'll have a lisence. If you just want to play around however, then maybe you'll want a "trial" version you can practice with untill you decide what you want to do with it.

Hope that helps.
