Magick 6 is pretty damn flawless.
I agree with what luke said, we listen to these guys for their tunes, not their mixing.
i saw AVB this weekend, and he played wicked tracks, but the mixing was not too good. it wasn't BAD like tiesto sometimes is, but what he would usually do would be to only mix for like 8 beats each transition, and for that you only have to be "pretty close" on the transitions. his songs went so well together you could hardly tell there was a mix sometimes though, he timed it perfectly and got the EQ and volumes good too. It also helped that it was a pounding soundsystem which covers little errors nicely. |
Magik 6 was cleaned up and all errors were fixed before it was sent out to the public.. plus like luke said, Tiesto went into that set fully knowing what he was gonna play, and fully prepared to how he was gonna piece them together.
tbh everyime i see Armin i am becoming more and more impressed. i hav seen him 6 times this year, and i love his style of mixing. I hav noticed that he seems to start bringing the incoming track in bout 64 beats before most DJ's do (ie. during the breakdown) so that as soon as the track goes into the intro, he wallops the bass over and fades out. This has the advantage of keeping the pace going, and apart from PvD and Eddie Halliwell, he is the best DJ i can think of at keeping the pace going like this. The only downside is that he doesnt play energetic tunes that are to my taste, but nevertheless i shall continue to go see him coz i think he is great! Bring on Armin Solo 17th July!

really? you sure it was cleaned up? How would you do that exactly even? especially with the crowd noise mixed in, and the echo in the room etc, i don't think it would be possible to "fix" a fucked mix.
if it is, let me know how, i have a bunch that are fucked!
I always thought that most of the magicks were made in studio with protools, or maybe cleaned, but that Magick 6 and 7 were both recorded live, with maybe some compression and EQ added to the whole mix. is this not true? if so, what is your source for this information?
as for practicing and knowing what he was gonna play and how to mix them, i think that is the hallmark of a good DJ. true tiesto has shiite mixing sometimes, but i think Magick 6 is awesome.

I think you can clean up some of the hissing, and/or record noise, but I don't know how you'd fix fucked up mixing. We need Dave Dresden to chime in and tell us if it's possible. Anyways, some of the transitions on magik 7 seem a bit awkward to me, but magik 6 and summerbreeze are perfect. Someone mentioned the transition between the last two tracks on summerbreeze, and those are the only ones really that are even a little off.
Tiesto in concert was not shit.
When you are there live, you just have fun and enjoy the tunes. It's different listening to a broadcast or recording.
