So you want to be a pilot, eh?
Well...there is always the military, but if you go civilian, there are a couple routes. A: Flying Degree at a University...the route I took. i.e. U. North Dakota, E. Riddle, Parks...etc. I went to UND, and majored in Air Transport. Did all my ratings with the school, top notch equipment/instructors. Tuition, Room/Board is very reasonable, but flight costs are elevated...alot. Riddle prolly cost even more, since it's private, while UND is public (and they have a good hockey team). Other schools may cost a little less...but expect the bill for EVERYthing to run +/- 100K.
The other civil route is to get your 4 year in anything (that's all airlines want is a 4 year...could be in basket weaving for all they care), and then do your flying through a Fixed Based operator...you know the local place at the airport. Definately less expensive, but probably less organized, less fancy equipment.
After you have your ratings you can flight instruct, and move up...maybe fly boxes and get multi engine time, and then meet requirements for airlines. Typical Entry Reqs are 1000-1200 Total Time, w/ 500 multi.
Is it easy...well if you like doing it, it's easy. Of course you study your tail off, are tested constantly, and then there is the FAA...sigh...always trying to take your ticket it seems...even though they are just doin their job. They uphold the rules...it's not like a cop letting you off with a freebie...it's serious business. And once you get to the airlines...you still study, you still get tested...over and over and over and over.
So, I did 4 years of college and 1 year of instructing..on my path to airline flying...I got in when the getting was good though. Right now, you are looking at an extra couple years of instructing and maybe some corp/box flying until you'll get the chance to go airline...hiring is slow, and remember you are now competing with people that are already airline pilots that lost their job. However, by the time you get your 4 year...things could be back on the up and up..and you could be in like flynn...that's the airline industry for you..it's a crap shoot.
Of course...you could be an accountant, wow....that's two different worlds. lol.
