have you sat down at a keyboard/computer with everyone of your records to determine its key? i doubt it. After playing records you just know what records sound good with the other ones.

I dont know for 100% sure that i mix in key, sometimes i probably dont, but i know what mixes sound good and what ones are crap, even though they are properly beatmatched.

I wouldn't worry too much. Most people are tone deaf, and the people that do notice are usually DJ's but I wouldn't worry about them either cos they can be just way to fussy or hard to please (well some of them).

Personally, i think it depends. If a whole set is played within a particular key, the set will sound to predictable, and thus imo, too boring.

i think you have too do something else any clown can learn to beatmatch i think the innovative djs do shit whether it be tease people with tracks, scratch, layer, play back loops or samples, accapellas whatever, just generally work you know, make the most of themselves, and chookie trance is so much more easier to mix then house man, listen to someone like derrick carter, or sanchez listen to what there doing and tell me thats easier then a tiesto spinback...

also if you have all that spare time... i guess you should be in your crate and really be thinking/trying differant records to get that perfect track selection... (please refer : stacey pullen)

oh and as far as doing shit, trance and progressive i think pales compared to something like... techno... imo techno djs are the hardest working guys around...

Makes mixing a lot smoother and therefore better in my opinion.

Nah I wouldn't assume that Key mixing makes things 'smoother'

However, it does make you avoid bass & melody collisions.

But at the end of the day, you still have to deal with the elements of each track as well as dealing with correct phrasing etc, so just because you've keyed your tracks, doesn't mean you've guaranteed yourself a smooth mix.




I must admit I have gotten rather bored with practice mixing lately. Its probably due to factors like me completing a decent cd, and the fact that I've grown in confidence in my abilities. Lately I'll go for a mix and be lucky to play more than 4 tunes. There are the odd occasions when I'll get on a roll and bang it out for an hour or two. But I think the key is to not pay a lot of attention to your mixing, otherwise it'll turn out like other things (chores, burdens, etc) Just keep a balance.
