In my experience, its best to just be honest and through yourself at the will of the cops when it comes to this stuff. That's exactly what my friend and I did and I don't think the outcome really could've been changed by anything we could've done, but didn't.

Haha, in canada, cops catch you smoking a doobie, they just ask you to put it out and smoke it elsewhere.

It goes both ways. I know some cops who are cool as shit, but that is because I knwo them on a personal level. In their approach they try to demand respect and control the situation. I have also run into some though that were complete asses, and have contacted the Internal Affairs department they work at.
