If you're playing in a club/pub/similar venue, they should already have an APRA license for you, but do you think it's safe to assume that if you're out DJing at parties for money that the pimply-faced-youth who's putting on a w1|<3d party for his mates has got one?
I'm not talking about when you pop over to a mate's place and throw down a couple of tracks for no payment, but small parties and such when you're being paid to DJ.
You also have to keep a good track listing so APRA can distribute the royalties properly.
