Well I haven't tried using them yet, but I have read in a book sometime that there are some dj's who can perform with them. The only thing to remember is that you have to use special earplugs, not the ones you buy for $5 in the supermarket.
You have to use earplugs that filter specific frequencies. You can get these in specialised stores. It should be possible to perform with these, because they filter frequencies, so you can hear everything, except it is all a bit softer...

I survived my first night. It was pretty freaking awesome. I played from 9-12 and by the time i got done the dance floor was almost full. I was really nervous when i started out but the lack of people there at 9 o'clock helped me remain calm. After a couple mixes I got used to the sound system and things went pretty smoothly. After one mix i did stop the wrong cd but luckily it was like my third song and there were just a couple of my friends there. The feeling I got from seeing people dancing and having fun was amazing. Its better than any drug.

it went pretty well, i got invited back so i couldnt have been too bad. I feel kinda spoiled now, after playing on a loud system with tons of bass i am not as excited about my bedroom set up. all the more motivation to land a weekly gig i guess

Yes, there are definitely special earplugs that you need to use. The plugs are custom fit to your ears and cost quite a bit ($100-$250 I think). Here is a link that you can read up on them some more.

There are also earplugs that aren't custom fit, but they do filter all frequencies though. These are about $40-50, so a bit cheaper.
