Dude, the 4GIG PC's are usually around the 300MGhz, and 64RAM, WTF will you do with 120 GIGS and a 333Mghz, 64RAM??? besides, bunch of programs require highre than that.. and even with the bios update, I assure you that with a 120 GIG, or less, lets say 80 or 60 GIG internal hardrive the PC will DIE loading... have you ever read the PC manuals and what are its limits in terms of upgrading Hardrive?!?!?

If you already have $200 or so to spend, save up a little more and buy yourself a new computer... If your computer only has a 4gb hard drive that probably means everything else in your computer will need to be upgraded too... Save up another $300 and go buy a cheap Dell or HP or sumthing... It will be a much better investment that another hard drive for the ancient computer you have....

THIS IS WHAT U NEED MY FRIEND

an affordable USB 2.0 external 160Gbyte Disk Drive

Do you want a portable disk drive that holds a MASSIVE 160Gb of data? Now you can do it with an affordable external solid aluminium USB 2.0 disk drive, with the fast Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160G (7200rpm) disk.

Prior to shipping we fully format the disk (as a single NTFS partition) guaranteeing that you can plug in the disk and use it within seconds.

This disk case is made from solid aluminium so both sides dissipate the heat and allow these new high-speed 7200rpm disks to be used intensely for extended periods without overheating. (*** see info below)

If you want the disk partitioned into multiple drives, or different formats (e.g. for Win98/Me), then let us know, and we will do it for a £5 charge prior to shipment.

The disk has great performance, faster than many internal disks. Even though its an external disk, on an ordinary Athlon 1700 PC with a USB2 PCI card it has 16.9 MBytes/s read and 16.6 Mbytes/s write performance.

Whether you want the disk to capture over 9 hours of broadcast quality DV Video, or as a massive disk for data or backups, this disk will do the job without breaking a sweat.

The postage charge of £6.50 for Royal Mail "Special Delivery" provides full insurance and a guarantee of delivery the next day by 12 noon. You will need to be present to receive the mail.

Hardware:
USB 2.0 enclosure containing Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160G Disk.

Pre-formatted and ready to use. (The NTFS format needs Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Contact us if you will be using the disk with Windows 98/Me)

Aluminium top and bottom faces (with superior heat dissipation).

Stand to hold the disk on its side.

UK Mains power adaptor.

USB 2.0 Data lead, approx 1m.
Software:
Driver CDROM for Windows 98SE.

Connection:
1 x USB 2.0 connectors

Disk Drive:
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, 160G 7200 RPM, 2M cache.

Uses fluid dynamic bearing motors to operate with extremely low sound output. Has Maxtor Shock Protection and Data Protection Systems to protect against operating and non-operating shock.

See Disk Specification

Data transfer rate:
USB 2.0 limit is 480 MBytes/s

The actual transfer rate through USB 2.0 is limited by the speed of the computer and disk. A typical PC (based on an Athlon 1700XP) has performance figures as shown below:

16.9 Mb/s read
16.6 Mb/s write
Dimensions: 216 x 122 x 33 (LxWxH, mm)

Operating System: Win 98SE, ME, 2000, XP

*** Heat Dissipation:
We have intensely soak-tested these disks by performing 8 hours of continual Read/Write access, at room temperature with no forced-air cooling. After this the hottest point on the disk drive's surface was 41°C, well within the specified maximum temperature allowed by the manufacturer of 55°C.

If you see other external disks on eBay please ask the seller what temperature the disk reaches after intensive use. We have seen the very hot IBM GXP disks sold in enclosures, which we know from experience tend to overheat.

£169.00

APPROX $230

then why don't we ask the guy interested in buying the HD what PC he has, instead of assuming he has a crappy 333MHZ wil 64RAM.....
besides, he said that the reason he wanted an external is so that he can pass it over to friends....... and believe me, that's the only difference between internal and external.... external is portable..... that's it!.... even if he has an external with a crappy PC, it will die loading.......

ANYWAYZ,
bloated_cow, what pc do you have?

Amdk-6 333mhz ,160megs of pc100 ram, 4mb integrated vidmem, 4 gig HD, windows 2000 pro,. that deal posted before is a VERY good deal i think. maybe i should just save up for a new pc though. Although, if i get the external, when i move, i will be able to take ALL my info with me. (because tthe computer I am using is not mine ) but, thanks for all the info ppl! I may just order that 160 gig external. 230$ is pretty cheap for an external of that quality, so i think that is just what i may do.

told ya he had an 333Mghz PC, bro I know.. I took some Computer classes, as well some technical learning, and actually OPEN up the PC's Manuals when it comes to upgrading something and up to how much they can be upgraded.

The External Hardrive is pretty good if your PC cant support more then certain amount of GIGS. So External work pretty good in that case, I want to get myself an external Hardrive as well, since I can only upgrade to 120 GIGS, Ive seen the 160-200 GIGS external, wich is Id like to back up.

Good Luck

you would also need a usb2 pci card as well, as usb2 is 40 times the speed of usb1 (which your motherboard will have (if it has usb at all))

I heard that if I completely remove my HDD, and swap a new one in its place, set it as primary, then install OS, it will be ok for me to ghost onto new HDD from old HDD, then I can keep old 4 gig (if i want to) as slave and even if I had a 160 gig internal, it should be ok as long as it's set to primary because the motherboard will adapt.

Can you confirm or deny these accusations!

yeah it would be possible to do the ghost process you said.

I do doubt if your system will support drives up to 160 gig though, use http://www.hwinfo.com/ to identify your motherboard and then list it here, and we can check for you, some older motherboards harddrive controllers can not use drives over certain sizes.
