Ahhh 3.11 was great. The good old days of needing to use a boot disk to play games, the 5 1/2" drive was standard, cd-roms had their own cassette trays, and wordperfect was the rage.

The OS I run usually is Windows XP, WIndows 3.11 is just emulated in the program "Connectix Virtual PC" and I only run it for fun and nothing else, I do all my serious work on Windos XP. Connectix Virtual PC is an excellent program for testing other OS's, and Windows 3.1x works beautifully in it. Only drawbacks are lack of Directx/Accelerated 3D Graphics Support, I was hoping to run some games under Windows 95 which Win XP doesn't like, but unfortunately that seems impossible.

P.S:
Do not let these screenshots tempt you to dig out your Win 3.11 diskettes and install it. Making Win 3.11 into a usable OS is a time consuming thing, and requires you to manually install a lot of drivers and it will NOT support USB, and nowadays hardware support is very limited.

haha.. tempt me of doing anythign hmphht... all the old operating architectures that microsoft has developed are horrible. Windows 2000 was produced by a entirely different development team which speaks in leaps and bounds as to why it is so much more stable. The computer in my living room hasn't been turned off/restarted in at least 3 weeks. win 3.x and win 9x could never have that kind of uptime. In short anything other than the new winnt kernel (which xp and 2000 are both based on) is shit. My first computer ran a novell shell on top of dos.. its like mid-ground between a GUI and plain old dos... kind of sucked. I used to connect to local bulletin board systems (via a 2400 baud modem) and play games. One of my favorites was this text based (there wasn't such thing as 'graphics' on this machine the pixels only had 2 values.. on or off (blue or an ugly green/grey)) space game where you navigated through sectors and blew the piss out of other real players. It was my first "online" multiplayer game haha.. there was probably 30-40 other people that played on the game frequently. The two people that ruled the universe were "darkangel" and "killermaddog" ... i always hated running into their ships cos they controlled about half the planets in the universe and there ships always had the best stuff on them (and proceeded to obliterate you)... haha... memories
just for those who don't know 2400 baud is approximately 1/20th of a 56k connection which is 1/11th of a standard dsl connection. 1/20 *1/11 = 220 times slower than my connection that i have now... wow.. computers have came a long way (i'm only seventeen btw i think i was using my first computer in like 1994)

....I started logging into MajorBBS systems in 1987 - playing many of the games you probably have. Galactic Empire from Galacticomm was my favorite and I rocked on there as well, not to mention Infinity Complex, Kyrandia and various other 'flash' (jump to dos shell, load game, play multiplayer via existing connection) games in the 'Teleconference/Chat' room...

Best unknown trick in GE was the ability to lose missiles in warp (always worked, fuck going to impulse and using decoys) - ever use it?

A few facts and figures about Windows 3.1x.

With IE5, much of the web is browsable on Windows 3.1x and it runs surprisingly fast, although I guess that's because I'm on a modern PC, I doubt this browser would work at all on your average 3.1x 486 machine with 8 MB RAM.

After installing Netshow, you can play MP3's fine. However players are rather limited. Winamp 0.x works with Win32s but isn't very stable, playing any MP3's and running IE5 at the same time often causes either to crash into a BSOD. Winplay on the other hand is very stable playing MP3's but is a very basic MP3 player, without even >>/<< (Fast Forward/Rewind) controls.

Paint Shop Pro 3 is still quite a useful program, and runs nicely.

However, the complete lack of USB support almost makes it useless for modern hardware, therefore most IP's won't connect so connecting a Win 3.1x machine to a network or an antiquated dial up modem are the only options for browsing on Win 3.11, unless you emulate it on top of Win 2000/XP in Connectix Virtual PC which shares the connection from your host OS.

Windows NT 3.51 (Released June 95) is quite a nice, stable OS for it's time in my opinion. It has a similar interface to Win 3.1x except for new icons/toolbars and user accounts at the top of program manager. From what I've heard, it's basically the same OS as Win NT 4.0 except less developed and somewhat more stable, and therefore is able to run many modern programs with ease (Mozilla, Winamp 2.x are just some of them). When installing programs on it, I've noticed that they often identify it as Win NT 4.0.

Has anyone else ever tried/used this OS?
