Johnny,

I took your advice and I contacted the local distributors for Denon, here in South Africa.

I'm not too sure where you heard / found out about the $200 difference between the them & the 1200s, but I have completely different pricing?

I'll give you the pricing I got from the distributors (in South African Rands), it's about 8.1 Rand to the US dollar. A $200 difference, would mean about a difference of about R1600 between the turntables.
Denon R4788 (from the distributor, so it includes a massive discount off the retail price)
Technics R4500 (from a store).

So from that, I'd say that the Denon are actually going to be a lot more expensive than the Technics in stores.

I'm not attacking what you said in any way - actually the exact opposite. If you find that pricing online, won't you either post a link or PM some more details.

I've been trying to find a pair of reasonably priced decks, so I'm really interested in the Denon.

By the way, you mentioned the DJ101s. Are they any decent?
Also the DJ100?

- A.

Widget, The pricing I got was from my friend who installs systems in clubs all over the US. I'll look into this a bit more as far as retail sales go. I just was going by his word that they are cheaper than Tech 1200s. He's been in the business for many years and in the past has always gone with the Tehc 1200s until recently when he started goin with the Denons. If it turns out that they only cheaper for wholesale or distributors, then if anyone is interested, I'm sure I could probably hook you up with some for less than what you would pay in the store. I'll talk to him about this and find out exactly what they would cost by going through him.

AMIT, Yes they are virtually the same....all the same parts plus.
And, although I'm sure they wouldn't admit it, there is no doubt that they are made by Panasonic for Denon.
I've always been a strong advocate for Technics 1200s. I've had mine for a long time and stand by them firm. So for me to come out and say that the Denons are just as good...if not better...meant that they really had to prove themselves to me...and they did. Once again, I'm only talking about the Denon DP DJ151. I don't know about the 101s.
Anyway, my friend is out of town right now and will be back in a day or two (he's doing an installation somewhere in San Francisco). When he gets back, I will get a direct price quote from him for anyone interested.

Many thanks Johnny.

I'd definitely be interested in the pricing issue. Only problem being that I'm in South Africa.

Shouth Africa, huh? I guess you're just about as far away as you can get from L.A...
My friend hasn't returned yet from San Francisco (probably decided to stay and party for a couple of days) but as soon as he gets back, I'll get some price info.
Widget, as far as your concerned, I could probably get a good price but I have no idea how much it would cost to ship from here to there.
Probably not cheap. I guess we'll just have to check it all out when he gets back. I'll keep you posted.

Johhny, I was the same opinion you are now a few weeks ago, but times has changed since i went to a store, they pulled up the upper part of the technics and the denon and compared it, well its A FUCKING HELL OF A DIFFERENCE there s just nothing that compares to technics, sure denon s got a digital outputt, hell with it, i like d like a powerfull motor much better then a f****** digital output. Just check the magnete under the technics and compare it with the one under a denon. Denon is not worth the money, technics is.

And if u wanna buy a cheaper model.., my opinion is that or u buy the cheapest thing on the market or u buy the standard like technics. Dont got the money for it? Buy the cheapest direct drive Gemini or something....

All those storys they are the same are just Sale Tricks... !!!!
Don't believe it or you ll waste you re money. Why do u actually think the technics is better?? Go to a fair turntable dealer and he ll show u the truth...
Technics got a powerfull industrial motor, denon s got a poor motor just like all those other brands as gemini, jbsystems ....

Are you sure it was the Denon DP DJ151 that they opened up? I can't say anything about the 101s because I don't know. But when we opened up one of the 151s, we found everything to almost identical. The Denon's were different in that they were easier to get into and had extra circuitry (for some of the other features). But the main circuitry, slide pitch control, tone arm etc. was identical to the 1200s.
And NO, I'm not a sales rep for Denon and not even trying to push people into buying Denons. I posted originally just to tell what we found when comparing the two. I was told that they are cheaper (still haven't gotten an exact price quote) and I know that $$ can be a major issue with a lot of people here. What I posted was for information.....not to try and sell anything.I'm going to check into this more because the one we pulled apart had a good strong motor (same torque as 1200s) and most other parts were identical....so now you guys have got me confused.

I am confused to, but ill buy 2nd hand technics to be sure...
I heard 2 different stories too, first i heard the denon and technics were identical, then day before yesterday i went to that store and saw the differences... they look identical outside but under the upperpart there were many differences , the technics looks far more powerfull, it was the dj101 but i doubt there are any differences between those 2.

Well, i would say a very good trick to see how powerfull the turntables are is this simple: u try to stop the upper part of the turntable with that little metal thing in the middle (i dont know the english word ). i tried it with a stanton and a pioneer,
the pioneer just didnt stop, the stanton did after a few seconds. try this with the denon and you ll see..

Now you've really got me wonderin'! The ones we compared it was inside that appeared to be the same...not the outside. (except for the tone arm...which is the same). My friend is supposed to be back sometime tonight or tomorrow morning. I left a message (or 3) for him to get ahold of me as soon as he gets back. Now I am baffeled! And as far as getting a pair of used 1200s.....you know you can't go wrong with 1200s.....this I know we can all agree on.

The 101 is totaly different than the 151!!!
The 151 is about the same as a 1200/1210, and the 101 is about the same as a Stanton STR8-80...
