You know heres a question Ive always wanted to ask, what seperates a PvD from a really good bedroom Dj. What I'm saying is what does it take to get to the next level, Im sure it cant be mixing alone can it?

First and very important part: Track Selection (reading the crowd and all that).

then comes a lot of other stuff that can be seen as unfair.

In no particular order:
1. Who you know.
2. Who knows about you.
3. Being at the right place at the right time.

1 and 2 is helped a lot if you produce tracks that get's somewhat successful. These can also overide everything else that's attributed to skills.

3 is basically just pure luck.

So, if you wanna make it, the name of the game is to make a lot of noise. Get to know a lot of people and let a lot of people know about you.

...and when you get there...don't f*ck it up

Also, in order to get playing out, its also important who you know, so networking plays a big part as well. And off course the amount of effort you put into your practising. Try to create your own style, instead of copying well known dj playlists.

having ur own style is incredibly important nowadays. if u just play the same tunes as everyone else then no-one will notice you. to become a successful dj u have to spend half your life in the record shops, so u get those little beauties before everyone else. you need to have something up ur sleeve, and depending on what style u play u may want to think about learning to cut and/or scratch.

make a lot of noise, go out to clubs a lot, talk to dj's, talk to promoters, then when uve got talking slip them a cd

producing is always a good thing if ur trying to make it as a dj, but do it for the right reasons. dont try and produce unless its because you want to produce.. its the same the other way round.. dont DJ just because u want to promote ur own music.. if you do it because you want to do it then u will become a better DJ

as for whether DJing is easy or hard.. it depends on what kind of person you are. for some people its relativly easy, for some its harder. the concepts are generally easy to pick up, but hard to master. start by just getting the beatmatching sorted and then crossfading. beatmatching is the vital part, and its the difference between a shit mix and an average mix.

hope this helps

King

producing is hard but not that hard

djing is hard for me since i dont do it often so i stick to atomix

atomixing is well easy, not that i take advantages of its full automation and shit, but i use it to beatmatch, thats it, the rest is all by ear and visual and sometimes instinct

Ive never toucehd the crossfader ever (only when messing about), it stays bang put in the middle

channel fading gives more control over the volumes for getting that perfect transition.

thats just my peronal preference though ;D

yep, channel faders are far superior, in my opinion as well. i only use the crossfader for when you really want to slam a track in or out quick, or scratching. which i hardly ever do, so it's always in the middle.

if you are reluctant to buy turn tables/mixer/monitors you might try

a) trying it at a friends house
b) maybe give the program "atomix" a shot if you don't want to try on actual decks
