the chipset on the board hes got is a Nforce 2.

the current motherboard imm using is based on a Via KT400 chipset, the Asus A7V8X, and ive had no problems at all, although i do know older via boards have had problems

[edit] saw you ment via boards, not chipsets!! the best board manufractures are ASUS, ABIT and DFI, from my personal experience, never had a problem with any of them. Also Intell boards are good for the P4 if you dont plan on overclocking.

MAJOR problems with the IDE controllers on VIA boards. Some hard drives have trouble using UDMA66, so they must be on UDMA33 or PCIO mode. Lots of other issues too, play safe and don't buy VIA.

I've had a LOT of problems with the 7200 40 gig Maxtor. But then again, it might just be my CRAPPY VIA IDE CONTROLLER.

Hmmm.. I see, okay thanks. I'm just not aware of a harddrive failure ever, my old computer is 3 year's of age with 9GB, and I'm pretty sure it's no name and it's perfect.

I would have at least gotten a GeForce4 MX instead of GeForce2. And another 256MB of RAM woulda helped you in the long run.

Not a bad pc tho, but definitely not the best. But you already know that...

For all of you having problems with your hard drives, have you looked into SpinRite? It really does work - only downside is that you can't use it on NTFS partitions.
