fuck genres...

there's no way to truly articulate any sort of boundaries, if you know what i mean.

moreover, prog is, in general, extrememly difficult to classify as anything other than simply 'prog'. it incorporates elements from everything, electronica or otherwise. not all prog incorporates trancey elements, and it does not need to incorporate these trancey elements in order for it to be prog. therefore, prog and prog trance are two different things if you do feel like attempting a classification.

but as i said, fuck genres. it's easier that way.

this aristotlean inclination humanity has, this inclination towards incessantly classifying anything and everything into insignificant subdivisions; it's a fuckin' useless waste of time and effort.

cheers

Ryan, you can't really say our nature to group similar objects and events is useless. Without classification, we wouldn't understand alot of the things in life.

For an example, the billions strains of the cold virus, we just call it "the cold". Because of this, we know that billions of them funcion in a similar manner, we don't have to make a billion experiments to study all of them.

Or
The classification system for animals. It helps us understand the history of this planet. If we can complete that classification system we would have a greater insight on how things happened, and how things will happen.

When you think about it, everything we do is... well... classify things.

ps. endlesswave, probably from the name thread.

NO

Progressive House was 1992...they went progressive trance...a little bit later then progressive a bit later.

all 3 are different genres

the problem is that many artists and deejays are bluring the lines between the genres, almost to the point where you just label it progressive because it has the house elements and the trance elements but you just think forward thinking music and label it progressive.

It all depends on what you think is prog trance, prog house or progressive. To me they will always be 3 separate genres that producers of today blur the lines.

To clarify things, why don't you post the name of 3 songs, one from each category that you feel best represents the 3 different genres so that those who can't see the difference can experience the various elements that 'define' the music

alrite why debate over this? Unless everyone can agree to disagree, topics like this have a tendancy of becoming highly flammable ..

Progressive is a genre with few defined lines

I honestly do think it is the person who listens and what their definitions are about the music. I think my musical history and knowledge is better than a lot of people, so I like to say they are 3 different genres because they all do exist, it is just the lines are blurred. Ryanmarcus..pm me and i'd be happy to explain why i feel their are 3 different genres.

Explaining it to the layperson is kinda difficult because they cannot differentiate between the genres as easy because it takes a while to understand. That being said, as I said earlier, lots of deejays are blurring the lines.

I'll use the explain of John Digweed's dark gu019 cd2 mix. Cd 1 starts off with prog house and then moves into progressive near the end of cd 1. CD2 is progressive with some elements of progressive trance mixed in but it is so hard for the normal person to understand.

Another way to look at it would be take a look at the global underground series in retrospect. You have gu011 which was prog trance then gu012 with had prog trance and prog house then gu013 which had prog trance, epic trance and prog house. Now gu015 was amazing but was house and techno...so that does not qualify. You move on to gu016 which has prog trance (some) but mostly prog and prog house. You move on to gu018 which was a dud but really progressive and prog house and then gu019 which was prog, prog house with the prog trance element at parts. Then gu022 which was progressive house and progressive. GU024 cd 2 was progressive/prog trance. You see not only the progression of the genres but how the lines blurred.

Best example i have was nubreed 4 by sander kleinenberg

cd 1 is prog house which moves out into progressive near the end of cd 1. Cd 2 starts prog house then moves into progressive trance and progressive but the lines blur so badly.

It's very true. It used to be Detroit house and then moved from there to Europe and changed. Where's that Url for the history of "techno" and house music at when I need it? :P
