If it assigns a single computer with an IP address, get a Cable/DSL router and after you have set one of te computers up with their funkiness have the router clone that PCs MAC address. It should work like a charm then. I got a DLink router for my mom for 20 bucks at best buy.

I am sure the net guys would be able to get you set up without being overly sneaky though. I would guess that a lot of college students these days have more than one computer.

FUCK, this is bizarre!!! just got a hub, set it up in minutes. everything's working fine... then on that same pc that couldn't access the net earlier all connections stop working EXCEPT for aim and ONE IE window, all other windows would give me a "server cannot be found" error...

restart - nothing works at all. i can see my lan, can access and ping the other machine, but I CANNOT SEE the internet and i cannot access my hub from this machine (although it DOES reply to pings)!!! (i have to log in @ 192.168.0.1). all the correct hub lights are on and blinking... i rechecked all settings, uninstalled and reinstalled the card (including switching pci ports)... i'm practically tearing my hair out here...


wtf is wrong? all settings are correct, it was working, and i didn't touch anything! what is it? faulty cable? faulty card? then how come LAN filesharing works??? plus i swapped the cables between the working pc and the non-working one and nothing changes... what is wrong???/ ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Find out what the DNS server address is on campus from a net tech.

Then manually enter that into the DNS tab in your net prefs (dunno where it is in windows off hand).

Your symptoms look to me to be a clear indication of no DNS lookup. If you can access things like AIM it is not an issue of being able to connect, it is an issue of resoving the domain names into IP addreses. AIM and MSN use a nmber of static IPs to connect to their services.

the problem is that i can't connect to anything anymore. aim just sits there saying "connecting to server" and never gives me a "cannot connect" error. i found some message on google groups of a guy having the same problem on a 10-pc network, but the thread doesn't have a solution. and both pcs have identical settings for masks/dns/ip obtaining etc.
