Spend time learning how each synth/effect works since experimenting is the best way of learning. They have a demo on their website.

Thanks for the advice SOLTRI
Do you have a link to the demo?

I'm a n00b too that has absolutely no clue about anything. Can you tell me a bit more about vsti synths. What do they do and how do you use them? I tried searching it on google but none of the resuults told me what they were. I tried dling one and I get a .dat and a .dll file, but no clue what to do with them.

I'm also having trouble with finding a nice program to start with. I really liked reason because the different synths had so many controlls and lots of presets that I could get a sound that was somewhere close to what I wanted. Unfortunatly I'm poor. With FLStudio I couldn't get anything anywhere close to what I wanted. It was even worse with buzzmachines. In buzzmachines all the different synths sounded very very similar.

VST synths are synth instrument plugins
So you would need a program (sequencer) to run the plugin in.

Don't worry about VST synths when you are starting out... Use whatever synths that come with the sequencer.

After you are starting to feel limited by the synths that come with your sequencer, then you should start looking for some quality VST's...

But basically, with production.. there are 2 ways to get sound... Generate it (using synths) or use samples (.wav files)... Then you take the sounds from those things, and add various filters, effects, reverbs, delays, EQ, compression, etc...

That, in a nutshell, is producing

I see, and a sequencer would be like reason fruityloops and jeskolabuzz? That would mean that I've been looking for the wrong thing in the programs. I should be looking at how easy it is to set up with the sequencer not what synths come with it because you can always download more. I guess in that case I'll go with flstudio because that was definatly the easiest to sequence with.

A sequencer is a very simple thing technically, it just sends out the music notation to whatever synth, drum machine, etc. that it's connected to. A sequencer doesnt even have to handle audio, it can sequence your devices (internal or external) and you can take that audio into a mixer, onto a HD recorder, etc. FL and Reason encorporate sequencers into their package, but they are much more than just sequencers. Personally I like to get almost every sound out of a synth, so i use FL to sequence these, but FL also accepts my audio and can route it for compression, phasing, and other manipulation. In essence, FLStudio and Reason are supposed to be virtual studios, they give you what was formerly hardware: synths, sequencers, commpressors, limiters, phasers, etc. and put it all on your computer.

You may have known this already but i feel like a lot of new producers are not quite sure what reason and FL are even supposed to be doing, hope this clears it up!
