A sequencer is a very simple thing technically, it just sends out the music notation to whatever synth, drum machine, etc. that it's connected to. A sequencer doesnt even have to handle audio, it can sequence your devices (internal or external) and you can take that audio into a mixer, onto a HD recorder, etc. FL and Reason encorporate sequencers into their package, but they are much more than just sequencers. Personally I like to get almost every sound out of a synth, so i use FL to sequence these, but FL also accepts my audio and can route it for compression, phasing, and other manipulation. In essence, FLStudio and Reason are supposed to be virtual studios, they give you what was formerly hardware: synths, sequencers, commpressors, limiters, phasers, etc. and put it all on your computer.
You may have known this already but i feel like a lot of new producers are not quite sure what reason and FL are even supposed to be doing, hope this clears it up!
