Prog music make me feel low, that's how I recognize it.

i agree. it's silly when someone puts down some subgenre altho they don't know shit about it.

your right its all about the music and mixing all the genres. its all about the sound of the music. not some silly classification
a real DJ knows how to mix every genre to fit the mood of the crowd and make it sound awsome and smooth.

but the classification is nice to help keep things organized. especially at the record store. so theres nothing wrong with trying to get "educated" on what genre is which

Progressive tracks are readily recognizable by their noticable shorter / less inane buildups/breakdowns and usually slower bpm. As some have mentioned sometimes it has a more "minimal" melody to it but not always, in fact some tracks are quite "fleshed" out (*cough* wavy gravy). Progressive essentially means "moving forward", it is not a descriptor of the music as some people would believe, and I *think* it's as much of its own genre of trance (which is *really* a subgenre of house anyway, no???).

Progressive refers to the mentality of the genre, moving forward. Prog tracks from the nineties usually sound a fair bit different than the ones today (one can say this to a certain degree for any genre, but it is key in prog). This is the result of it's sound evolving (and it's now split in two, it wasn't always like that i don't believe, and this can be primarily credited to sasha & digweed IMO as they were the first superstar DJs to usurp the prog trance sound..).

I'll put it in the simplest terms.

Trance starts with a fast beat and then it gets all quiet and then theres a catchy melody, and all this is repeated twice usually. Generally it gives off an energetic feeling.

Progressive basically starts with a slow beat and then it gets all quite and then it starts again maybe with some new sounds. This gives a chillout / relaxed feeling.

Its easy to distinguish them, just try some tracks that people mentioned and compare them. You'll get it in two seconds.

By the way I dont know about other people but there exists no progressive trance, progressive house, or progressive to me. Its just all house. And theres no uplifting, epic, or melodic trance. Its just trance. Trance, house, psy, techno, breaks, drum n bass. All you need to know.

i have to disagree with part of your statement... prog i believe is less minimal than standard trance... progressive tends to focus on multiple layers of sound while trance tends to focus on the melody along with the build ups and breakdowns... if you're looking for minimal i would say you should pick up some electro/electroclash

Digweed and Sasha [EDIT: Sasha does play very trancey in his last sets, but his DV set f.e. is not very trancey at all] do not play progressive trance. It's very hard to describe what progressive is. Everyone here is trying to explain the qualitie's of progressive. But Progressive doesn't always start with just a beat, doesn't always give you a chillout feeling, etc. Listen to it, don't try to push it into a certain corner.
