technics are at the top of the food chain when comes to turntables but they aren't the only good/ reliable turntables out there. if you have the money to spend you cant go wrong with technics, however if you dont have alot of cash to spend on a set of decks then you can certainly get by with out them. by all means, if you can shell out the cash for 1200s go for it, you wont be dissapointed but dont think that the only decks that you can use for djing are 1200s. tt-200s are good decks, st-100s, st-90s, etc. will all get the job done as well. i probably wouldnt venture too far down the line into the really cheap turntables out there but these ones that i've mentioned are fine.
to all of the technics lovers, i'm with ya, i understand your arguement of buying technics right off the bat but realize that some people just dont have that kind of cash to spend on two turntables.

everyone says technics are the best, and most clubs have them. when i started i looked everywhere to find a nice set of 1200s.. but after looking at the tables and then at my wallet.. no way. i thought it out ALOT, and i decided that i could do without the best at home. i opted for st8-80s.. (the best stanton decks at the time) and i love them. these are pretty good decks, and if youre planning on getting them, i definitely recommend them to the beginner. their torque, pitch shift etc etc are damn good. (if you can get the st-100s though, DO IT, ive checked them out and damn they are nice..)
if money is a big deal, dont go for techs yet. pay $500-$600 on some stanton str8-80 or 100s, because these are great for home use and practice. i am assuming youre going for the platinum pak 2 or titanium pak.. theyre really good deals for what you get, and there is no lack in quality. if you can go titanium, the str8-100s are great.. good luck diesel0

Unless you are into scratching, there isn't really a compelling reason to get Technics over other decent, but much cheaper tables.
Face it, for trance, all you need is a direct drive with stable and reliable pitch. Torque is not that important.
My first decks were Numark TT-100's, $400 CAD for both of them. I learned how to mix on them, and there is no reason why I should be shelling out $1000 CAD+ to get Technics when I can mix perfectly good on these.
The equipment doesn't matter. What matters is YOU...
