But with North Korea.. how patriotic are its citizens? Do we and can we ever know?

Think about it from childhood they grow w/ constant propaganda blasting to them throughout their lifetime. They are completely cut-off from the world. They don't have any outside influence (especially the poor which is the majoirty) or exposure. They have 3 TV stations, all state run. I don't know, but I could see me even in such a horrible environment (how would I know its horrible w/out comparison?) propagaded day and night to be very patriotic to Commy NK.

edit: oh and another 1984 thing - they are always at a continual state of war too with their Southern neighbors. I'm sure the common NK has vast misconceptions and incorrect depictions of the South Koreans.

you are right. But these people are outraged, they just keep it to themselves and there's no ways for us to know about it because of the strict controls in NK. As soon as the regime in NK changes, people will open their mouth, exactly like Iraq. Remember all those manifestations to support Saddam ?

The best form of control is the one that the masses aren't aware off.

Actually, I think I read somewhere that the people of NK were so incredibly indoctrinated and shut off from the rest of the world that they have no concept of what the outside world is like at all. And in a lot of cases they actually support the regime! But in either case, N. Korea diverts all its food to teh military and away from civilians so I wouldn't expect to see any internal collapses anytime soon ... shame.
